"A Question about " Silence of the Lambs " s " I need your help

This is something that has inspired many film discussions and / or debates with friends of mine for a long time.

I think it is a remarkably great movie, and like many of you - I have seen it countless times.

It's on cable tonight .. so it got me thinking about this darn scene again.

OKAY :
HOW does Hannibal Lechter get ahold of the pen clip - that he later picks the lock with, for that clever and brutal escape.
We ( as audience ) assume he has gotten the pen, or at least the idea from his psychiatrist.
This is based on a small moment when Lechter ( while chained, masked, and wheeled in ) looks at the pen, which is sitting far away from him on a clipboard, and then later..
His psychiatrist thinks he has misplaced the pen, when he needs to sign a release, or whatever.

I believe that there may have been a scene where Hannibal 'somehow' has access to it!! But how???...

Maybe it was scripted, and filmed.. and the scene didn't make it in the final cut.

I believe in suspension of disbelief, but if ANYONE knows..and wants to discuss this..
CAWL ME!! ..
Or, at least POST your answer, so I can FINALLY get some sleep.

* It is the ONLY part of this amazing movie that doesn't add up *

I'll go along with the "it ended up on the cutting room floor" hypothesis.

ive watched the movie a few times,and i never once thought about the "pen" issue.

im gonna take awhile ass guess from what i remember and say he stole it some how!

okay i looked up the Script to the movie and

here
As he stares a moment longer at the pen, then shifts his eyes towards Chilton. We can almost hear his brain clicking
thats the action of hannible and after that theres nothgin till

this
Chilton instinctively pats his shirt pocket for his gold pen; it's gone. He searches other pockets, with growing unhappiness.

Sooo in the scrip there is nothign inbetween abotu how he got it

I will never get ANY sleep, until I get a first draft of the script.. OR ..
until I have a chat with Ted Tally or Jonathan Demme.

Every damn time this movie is on, I try to figure out HOW Hannibal did this.
Once again, to no avail.

~ There are 20 minutes of deleted scenes on the DVD.
Still unexplained, though ~

The " pen scenes" in this ( almost flawless ) film begin with Chilton sort of 'chewing' on the pen,
while taunting Hannibal about the " Cell with a window " deal - which the Senator offers in exchange for the Buffalo Bill profile.

A following shot clearly indicates that Hannibal ( who, to reiterate is chained , masked, and wheeled in )
gets an idea to use that Pen - or as we later learn, the Pen Clip itself - which is hidden in his mouth..

*[ it's where I keep my Pens, because those Pocket Protectors are so dorky ]*

... then the movie skips to Chilton searching for his pen.
