View Full Version : IRAQ ATTACK?

If we go to war to topple Saddam Hussein now, will it be because IRAQ is threatening us directly (if any one country is to be held responsible for 9/11, it should be SAUDI ARABIA!) or because the Government is trying to cover up their complete economic failures? I fear it's the latter (Bush still has to avenge his daddy, remember), but either way, let's hope they don't waste lives on an unnecessary attack. At least finish the job.

I am not sure of what you are trying to say.
You seem to be all over the place with you thoughts.
Why would Bush need to avenge his father? Bush senior won the Gulf War;)

I dont really think we won the Gulf War since Hussein has been a thorn in our side ever since. They should have taken him out then.

OK, one more time...
The mission of the Gulf War was to liberate Kuwait and to protect US interests in Saudi Arabia.
The mission was not to roll into Baghdad, become bogged down in a long, protracted war, and have thousands of US soldiers killed.

Do you even rember that war? Thousands of U.S. troops could be lost? The Iraqi army was a bunch of guys who surrendered quicker than Italy in W.W.2(heh,heh)! Iraq is no threat to us, we could obliterate them in a second. W. is covering up his corporate malfeasance with some need to make up for his daddy's failures. Bush Sr. was a one term President for exactly the same reasons W. is in deep shit now. How about finding Bin Laden berfore he tries something else?

OK, i get it. You are all over the place with your thoughts of the past 12 years. That's fine.
By the way, I have studied modern warfare as an Infantry officer in the US Army and I have follwed the annoying discourse that has follwed our VICTORY in the Gulf war for the past 12 years.
Too many people want to be Monday morning quartersbacks and make calls on what should have taken place during that war.
Read the mission. Analyze the statistics surrounding the battles. Read the views of the leaders at the time:Stormin' Norman, Colin Powell, Bush.
Thanks - I'm done;)

Thanks for the discussion, Rooster. I respect your opinions. One thing though: Didn't the military want to eliminate Hussein but were stopped from doing so from "higher ups"? And CZM: How about Saudi Arabia first, considering they practically bankrolled 9/11.

The "higher ups" you are talking about are the President (Bush) and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (Powell).
I think that a military can get on it's high horse and start to creep its mission beyond what was originally planned. That is why Powell held any military officers from moving into Baghdad. He was their leader. He made the right decision at the time.
To digress, the reason Powell is a critic of the mission in Yugoslavia (Bosnia) is because their was never an "end state" given to the mission. The mission is now going on and on without the end in sight. Powell added an endstate to the Gulf, and when that state of the mission was accomplished, we disengaged, set up security and brought the boys home. That's how a leader wins the hearts and minds of his own men. They know where they are going, what they are doing, and when they are going to be done. Remember, Vietnam had no clear endstate, and it was a horrible mistake atht had resonated for generations.
Thanks for the debate. I am off to class. CYUH!!!!!

Congress and the UN. U.S. and coalition forces were authorized to remove Iraqi forces from Kuwait, not conquer Iraq.

This makes no sense to me... when law enforcement goes after a criminal, they don't just make them leave the town/state/ whatever... the don't say, "Oh, he went home, there's nothing we can do now"
I know there are certain "laws" in place, but logically, I just can't follow it, and it seems to be our unwillingness to follow up our military strikes with any real decisions or changes that led to 9/11... they knew that we would not go after the real masterminds, because we didn't in the gulf war, and we didn't after the '93 bombing, or the embassy or Cole bombings, and we're not going after Arafat now. We might as well just invite these people to do whaever they want for us, because we send over military, we have some gunfights, drop a few bombs on some caves in the desert, we blow up a few soldiers and crash a few aircraft during training missions, but we don't really do anything.
I mean if I'm wrong, let me know, but I don't think I am, here...

You take the cake for being annoying, bud. Get your facts and history straight before you take on an Army Ranger and then blast board members like that. The difference between the US and those others is that we went into the Gulf and did exactly what we set out to do, liberate Kuwait. And by the way, there were US fatalities during that war. It was not the cakewalk you think it may have been.

We are re-living the movie SUPERMAN II. George Bush is Jor-El. He got Saddam out of our hair for a good decade (General Zod banished to the Phantom Zone). W is Kal-El and Saddam wants to crush the son of his jailer. bin Laden is Lex Luthor helping the cause. Tony Blair is Lois Lane standing by her man. Superman lost his powers and got his ass kicked (9/11) but wins in the end (USA...USA...USA)

or because the Government is trying to cover up their complete economic failures?
what government economic failures?
Last time i checked it was a combination of greedy CEO's and the largest torriest attack on US soil that is the cause of our current problems.

I really think invading Iraq would be a BAD IDEA. Yeah we could crush Sadam, but then what? Will the Iraqi's greet us as great white liberators?
I doubt it. Some wank at the Defense Dept. said we'll need an occupation force of 50,000 will be needed till we've "weened the population from it's support of Sadam". I'm old enough to remember how we got into Vietnam and this is too like that for comfort. It will be expensive, kill and maim lots of Americans, and will not stop towel head terrorism any more than the Isreali's have been able to stop it by going back into the West Bank and Gaza.
