i'm currently in the market for a laptop... i dont need anything too crazy fancy, but i want something good that will last and work well. money really isn't an issue, i just want to be happy with what i get. i know very little about computers, but i figured that there's bound to be some people out there with some suggestions...

I've worked with Dells, Compaqs, and HP laptops. I've found Compaq to be a reliable system for laptops.

You'll have to be a little more specific about what you want, Ari. There's a lot of variables when it comes to purchasing a computer, especially a laptop.

The minimum things you should know that you want is speed (processor), whether the drives will be built-in or not (weight difference) and the software package (if you get it from the company when you buy it, it usually reduces the overall cost).

You'll have to be a little more specific about what you want, Ariwell, you can see how little i know...

basically, i need the laptop for school. so i'm not going to be doing too much with it, mostly word processing and the like. but, since i'm going to be spending a nice sum of money on this, i want to make sure that i'll be happy with what i get, and that it'll be able to handle pretty much whatever i decide i might want to do with it. i definitley dont need the most fancy or advanced computer going, just something good. and something more or less managable would be nice, too.. i'll be carrying it around a lot

I bought a Dell Inspiron 8100 about 4 months ago (the latest model is an Inspiron 8200 now). It has a 1 GHz Pentium III processor, 30 Gb hard drive, 8x CD read/write/DVD player, a floppy drive and 256 Mb RAM and a 15" Super XGA+ screen. Basically, it's very fast and there's plenty of room on the hard drive. I also got a carrying case and an extra battery as part of a promotion. The whole thing cost about $1800. I'm very happy with it.
For options, I'd recommend the combo CD burner/DVD player (fun) and the external mouse (moving the cursor with the touch pad gets real annoying really quick). I'd suggest visiting dell.com, compaq.com or gateway.com for ideas, especially if weight is a concern.

Dell and Compaq both make extremely small/portable systems (13" - 14" screen) that are low in weight, with swappable drives.

If you're primarily doing word processing, a Celeron or AMD processor would reduce the cost for what you're looking for, and work just as well with Word, WordPerfect, or other word processors.

For Compaq, check out their Presario 1500 line, they have CDRW/DVD drives, and large hard drives. Since you'll be using this as a student, and you may need network connectivity as school, it comes with integrated 10/100M network port. These are large screened computers (15") and have full-sized keyboards which are good for typing.

Dell offers the Inspiron line, which are fairly rugged machines and offer the ability to customize them at order time. There are models with smaller, 14-inch screens as well as 15-inch. I'd say go with either the 2650 or better. I've found Dell's support to be pretty good (but I deal with them on a business level)

The IBM Thinkpad series is a good place to go where money isn't an issue. The machines are solidly built, and they are very adaptable (just not too stylish). These machines have good period warranties (1-3 years) and their EZ-serv repairs usually have a turn-around of 2-3 days. Check the T-series (more business-oriented) as they offer lighter weights with a good combination of components.
