View Full Version : Are We Winning The WAR on Terror?

What do you think?
I think we are kicking ass and taking names.
The results have been outstanding. The sad truth is, we have had more deaths due to accidents than due to enemy fire.
I feel a lot safer with the level of militarism we have seen in the last 11 months.
That is my perspective.
What do you feel?

"Winning" but not yet "won".
I'm concerned about al Qaeda cells in Africa, Indonesia and The Philippines as much as those still in Central Asia and the Middle East.
Although it's going to take time you have to be proud of the job done so far by the men and women of our armed forces.

I don't feel safe at all. It could be I'm just paranoid, but I really think that an even bigger terrorist attack is coming. Every day when I get out of bed, the first thing I do is turn the tv on to CNN, just to make sure nothing big happened. The thing is, I don't really think this war can be won, no matter what we do. We might think we're winning, but then the next thing you know, some attack that we never even imagined could happen. I do believe that President Bush and all of our government are doing the best that they can, under the circumstances. But there are just too many people out there who despise America, and have made it their goal to destroy us.

Sorry, that didn't really have much to do with anything, but this was the closest topic I could think of to say that.

I really think that an even bigger terrorist attack is coming.
Don't you think that is why we are considering attacking Iraq?
I think we are doing our best NOW that Clinton and his anti-military staff is out of power.
There was a General who was asked to take his uniform off when he entered the Whitehouse during the Clinton administration because a man in uniform was no welcomed.
That is a disgrace and yet another scar on the face of the Clinton administration.
If you don't believe me, research the relationship between the Clinton admin. and the Generals who were trying to manage the crisis in Somalia.

Every day we wake up, turn on CNN, and find out another attack hasnt happened, we win. The USA will always have enemies because we are what they want to be, #1. We gained enemies after September 11th for the very fact of our resiliency. For the fact that we did not crumble, and will not crumble, people hate us. The very fact that we can go about our lives, watch tv, post on msg boards, and laugh, makes us winners. God bless our uniformed forces, local, national, and abroad. They are doing a fantastic job.

I have mixed feelings about the US attacking Iraq. On the one hand, I think we should, just to get that crazy asshole Saddam out of office. But, I don't want America to get too cocky. They may all look the same to us, but Iraq and Afghanistan are two different places. Nuclear weapons are nothing to fuck around with. I am in no way defending Iraq, but we as Americans, must keep in mind that there are 2 sides to every story. Yeah, Iraq has nuclear weapons, but guess what? So do we. Everybody is to blame for the way the world is today. It will never get better, it can only get worse. You want to know why it will never get better? Because for that to happen, people would have to change, including Americans. And we are so far away from reality in this country, it is frightening. Do you ever watch the evening news? Last night, on NBC channel 4, one of the stories they covered was of a cat in California that steals shoes throughout the neighborhood, hence, a CAT BURGLAR. And you wonder why other countries hate us? <P>
No war is ever won. We will keep going around in circles until God, if there is one, says, "Enough."
Having said that-GOD BLESS THE USA!!!

I think we've lost the war on terror. Terrorists may be a different story, but as for the war on terror, we've lost.
You know how I know? We mostl likely aren't going to rebuild the twin towers the way they were before and even if we did, people would be afraid to work on the higher floors.
The war on terror is about as winable as the war on drugs or the war on ignorance. We'll never be rid of any of it no matter how much some of us may want to be.

I think we are doing our best NOW that Clinton and his anti-military staff is out of power.
I'm sorry, but I just have to reply to that comment. But sad to say it's not a big surprise hearing something like that.
Clinton and his anti-military staff are responsible for the problems with terrorism existing in the world, and now that they're out of the way, world peace is of course inevitable, right? They were also responsible for September 11th .who else would be responsible, after all? And they're of course responsible for the economy sucking ass.yep that was good ole Willy too. Oh yea and they're responsible for all the corporate scandals..yep. Middle East violence? Yep that's Clinton's fault. And also, I hear Clinton killed JFK too.something about a time machine.he may have even been Hitler too.I'm not sure about one but yea, he probably was. He was responsible for everything else bad that ever happened or will happen, right? Uhhhhg.
I just wish for once someone could hold a balanced and fair argument laying blame on everyone.democrats, republicans(yes, republicans too! They're not angels, as some may have you believe), and all the other idiots who had a part in not being in the forefront in the fight against terrorism. Blaming one party specifically for September 11th, through a direct or indirect comment, is still as lame as it was before 9/11 when democrats and republicans would sit around blaming one another's parties rather than having an actual honest and unbiased discussion.
And in response to your "scar on the Clinton administration", I think having the BIGGEST TERRORIST ACT ever to occur in the history of the world happen on his watch was kind of a partial scar on the Bush administration.of course blame goes around to the Clinton admin as well as numerous others.but I don't think anyone is innocent here. Of course I would agree that Bush handled the post 9/11 mess fantastically and with great courage and determination.but does that mean that they hold no responsibility for what happened? I don't think it does.
And I think that the recession we're in is sort of a scar too.don't ya think? When the stock market drops 1000 points in a few days, I think that whatever administration that's in office, democrat or republican, starts to scar up a little.and while I'm sure you want to pin the blame for that on Clinton too, there is, once again, enough blame to go around to a lot more people than the previous democratic admin.
It's as if you think Bush and his administration can do no wrong. It's amazing how biased that thinking is. You say that it's a disgrace for what the White house did to that general you mentioned, and I agree that it is.
But I think it's also horrible to have a completely biased and close-minded opinion about events in history that were undoubtedly the fault of numerous parties and individuals. I'm not saying that this is you in particular, but from that comment, it sure seems like it.
And in terms of the war on terror, yes we're winning in Afghanistan. But in the dozens of other countries, in the Middle East, in Kashmir, we're doing nothing, or by far not enough. Iraq is the easy target. The other ones are hard, and are much more dangerous to the stability of the world, in my opinion. To quote furie, "Victory will come when the American mindset of "let's got back to the way it was" has been replaced with tempered vigilance.". I think too many people are back to the way it was, and the american public really hasn't been changed as much as the news media would like us to believe we are.

Bill Clinton and his staff are the reason we are in the situation we are in today. If a world power ignores obvious enemies of the state and allows them to flourish, that power will surely be usurped.
If you see a rabid dog foaming at the mouth and pacing you neighbors yard while your 3-year-old child is playing in the sandbox in your yard, do you wait for you child to be mauled before you take action? No, you go and get a shotgun and a pitchfork and rid the neighborhood of a menace. Bill Clinton and his staff allowed Osama and his cronies to not only roam the world spewing hatred for America and establish sleeper cells in our own country, but he actually allowed them to attack us without response.
When America entered Somalia, during Operation Restore Hope, we lost soldiers aircraft and pride in the country because Clinton allowed his staff, Les Aspin and Madeline Albright, to call for military response to militant enemy action without even consulting the Pentagon. Colin Powell, a General at the time, said that he read about the plan to use force in the paper the Monday following the decision. That is wrong. Clinton was asleep at the switch. We should never have left Somalia after the fight at the Bakara market. We should have reinforced those troopers and regulated their skinny asses. Instead, Willy pulled us out of the country and hid our tail between our legs like a scared puppy. We sent a message to Osama - Come kick our ass. We love it!
A senior military officer was told that he was not welcomed into the Whitehouse by a senior Clinton staffer because men in uniform were not welcome. Clinton, you wanted to smoke pot and run from Vietnam, did you also have to wipe your feet on the uniform of heroes?
When the US Air Force's Khobar Towers were bombed in 1996, what was Clinton's response? Launch a few cruise missiles without current intelligence and act like that was a response? That's exactly what he decided on. Message to Osama - Kill our soldiers - We'll just roll over a grab a hummer from an intern and call it a night.
The USS Cole was bombed in 2000. This was a direct reflection on Clinton's leadership while in office. We have one of our projections of US might nearly get sunk and we change the subject of what the true reason for the attack is and shrug our shoulders. Message to Osama - Attack the face of America and the Americans will turn the other cheek and take the punishment.
We sent weapons inspectors into Iraq only to see them turned away at the doors of chemical weapons and biological weapons plants. We should have said: We suspect there are weapons of mass destruction in your facility. If you do not allow the US to inspect this facility, it will be destroyed from the air by a B52 and napalm that will burn the substance out of existence." Instead, we let the Iraqi's hide the weapons and stockpile them for future use. Mark my words; this mistake may cost thousands of Americans their lives. Message to Saddam: We will look the other way while you look for new and better ways in infect the world with disease and death.
Well, Bush has laid down the law and has placed quite a tourniquet on the gushing bloody wounds to America. He has decided to send a real message to terrorists and enemies of America: We will find you where you live and hunt you down like the filthy animals you are!
I have no problem with Arabs who want to live in harmony with the rest of the world, but I do believe that the cancer of fundamentalist, militant terrorists are pulling the strings of the puppets who are willing to die in the mission of destroying America.
Clinton allowed the hatred of the world to keep us beaten down for far too long.

I completly agree with rooster on
this. not responding to terrorists
encourage them to attack again.
strategic attacks designed to
disrupt their networks work well,
as we've all agreed.
Clinton had ample oppertunity to
respond to real threats and
American deaths. But he didn't.

I am going to have to agree with Rooster here too. If you think about it, most of the major terrorist attacks on U.S. interests happened on Clinton's watch. It started with the first World Trade Center bombing, the Embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania, the Oklahoma City bombing (not Middle Eastern terrorists, but still avoidable), and the U.S.S. Cole bombing. All of these attacks, followed by minimal, poorly planned retaliation taught the September 11th terrorists that they really had nothing to worry about. It showed Al Queda that the U.S. suffered from battered woman syndrome, and that the terrorists had nothing to worry about by killing thousands of Americans. At least the Bush administration has the balls to show them that they are wrong.

I think that a sign of us winning the war on terror is our slow but steady reducing of security measures. It shows us that our goverment is confident they can keep us safe with out the mass protection. I was just at the Mall (DC Mall, its where the capital is for those who dont know what im talking about) and i saw this "movies on the mall" thing with my friends, its basically a movie screen by the washington monument. There was hundreds of people there and no security, sure it was a terrorist hunting ground but i felt safe.

I think we are. Sorry, but it pisses me off when Ron gets on the show with an agenda to bury Bush. He always says the war on terror is too limited. Stop your bitching. I don't know what he wants Bush to do.
As far as Iraq goes, I think Iran poses a bigger threat than Iraq. I think it is more likely that Iran has nukes than Iraq.
Rooster- you forgot to mention that under Clinton, enlisted military personnel were eligible for food stamps.
Clinton is not to blame for the current economy, nor was he responsible for the boom economy of the mid-90s. He was lucky enough that the internet came along.
But I think it's also horrible to have a completely biased and close-minded opinion about events in history that were undoubtedly the fault of numerous parties and individuals.

I feel that from this point looking back, we have done the best we can as a nation. We are more alert than ever in America but I think we beginning to forget the war on terrorism and like many have said, fallen back into the PC world.
In JFK, walking in the terminal as I dropped off my sister going to LA, I noticed numerous armed men in army regalia. It really made me secure in such a turbulent time for our nation. The sense of security is there and I hope we maintain that.
I agree as well to Rooster. that Clinton has to take the blame for his shotty policies he has enforced over his tenure. But Bush has to take part blame for not acting on the warnings about an event the magnitude of 9-11.
We need to step it up a notch. Get our forces in their other spheres of influence especially the Philippines (eventhough it is the country where my parents are from) and eliminate the terroristic threat (Al-Queda, Abu-Sayyaf, etc.).
Are we winning? You damn right America is. Is it close to over? Far from it.

I think that we're winning the war on terror as well as we're winning the war on drugs.
You can NEVER win the war on terror! To do that, you would not only have to kill the terrorists all over the world, but all their relatives as well!
If you kill an evil person, their offspring vows revenge. You get rid of an evil, another evil will take it's place.
Do you think in this world of political correctness and pacifism, we can kill EVERY terrorist alive?
The only way to win the war on terror is to arrest or destroy EVERYONE associated with terror.
This will never happen

Why does it have to be one country at a time? Why can't we go after all the terrorists where they are at once? What better show of force? The people who are doing this will think twice before they act. The people in these countries who aren't part of this will be more likely to rat on the terriost's if they know they might be killed or lose everything they own that they worked hard for. It's also time for us to show what makes us great. Coming together and doing what needs to be done when it needs to be done.
I still get the creeps when I see a couple of emergency trucks (Police, Fire and Esu) in a row on the highway or street.
I don't think we have forgotten. It's just not talked about as much. Which is good and bad. We are supposed to go on with life as normal. But life as normal isn't being obsessed with terrorism every day. I will NEVER FORGET all the poor innocent people that lost their lives in such a horrible way that day.

CNN is too clueless...they're not the "liberal" monster that some people like to claim, they just seem to ignore actual news and focus too much on entertainment news and fluff pieces. Fox News is god-awful. It's too full of talking heads and people who just want to offer editorials, and rarely ever just presents the news. Plus they flog that dinosaur-old idea that "liberals rule the media" that only paranoid and out-of-touch conservatives throw around just so they can have something to complain about. MSNBC is about the only network I can tolerate, and even that not for very long...I need something new for my news fix!

I actually get most of my news from a cable feed of BBCNEWS.

Good call, Furie...I catch BBC News on BBC America as often as possible...they also show it here in DC on a local cable access station each evening...FINALLY, the Brits are good for something...
