Quadrophenia fans: Did Jimmy go over the cliff?

At the end of Quadrophenia, Jimmy takes Ace Face's scooter and drives it towards the cliff. You see the scooter go over, but you never really see Jimmy. For years I always thought he went over the cliff with the scooter but a friend of mine swears you can see Jimmy still on the cliff.

Anyone? Discuss.

I haven't seen the film in a while but I seem to remember that the first scene in the movie relates to the last scene in the movie. Doesn't Jimmy walk away from the water at the beginning?
