Honestly I didnt grow up listening to much rap, I think the only albums I had were the Fat Boys and this other one that was just a plain mix of rap. But from what I remember, it wasnt all about killing people, and bitches, or how you gre up in the hood. It was more about having a good time, sitting back partying, chillin with your homeies. Now a days its all about F***ing woman, killing people , or running from the cops, and other stupid crap. Anyone else feel this way?

Well now a days rap very rarely deals with killing someone or running from the cops. Now its more about having bitches, having a nice car with rims and drinking cristal and moet. Now for my brief review of the history of rap as i know it
1st you had all the early N.Y. groups sugar hill gang, doug e fresh, fat boys, roxanne shante, etc. etc. who all looked about as hard as a gang from the movie warriors.
Next was when rap grew for the first time: you had N.Y. guys like Run DMC, Kool Mo Dee, LL Cool J, the Beastie Boys (no matter what people say Licensed to Ill is a rap album), Eric B.and Rakim and EPMD. You also had a small movement of West Coast Guys like Ice T, King T and N.W.A. --The west coast guys were the ones who started rapping about killing, selling drugs and hating the cops because that is what they had when they were growing up in the ghetto and merely took what they saw and did and put it to music.
Next came the sing song/ love song era of rap from about 88-91. You remember the times where no one cursed and it was all about having fun dancing--you had groups like Heavy D. and the Boys, the Fresh Prince, Tribe, De La Soul, Arrested Development etc. etc.
Then came the explosion of West Coast Rap from 91 through sometime between late 93 and fall 94. This came about with Dr. Dres album The Chronic. This started the boom of everyone drinking 40's, drinking liquor, f'n chicks and smokin weed. You had guys like Snoop, Dr. Dre, Tha Alkaholics, Souls of Mischief, 2 Short growing to national prominence, E40, Rappin-4-Tay and 2Pac
But in late 93/ early 94 the album that bought East Coast Back, and single handedly changed the rap scene came out the album:
Wu Tang Clan--Enter the 36 Chambers. It was/still is a grimy, gritty, hard core take it to the streets album. Never before had lyricists like this really been heard, they used more instrumentals in their songs then looped beats, using instruments never used in rap before for their beats with a violin and piano.
After this albums release in late 94/ early 95 people discovered Notorious B.I.G. whose album had been out for 5 months before getting recognized. Also at this time you had the release of more hard east coast groups and soloists like--Redman, Keith Murray, Outkast, Lost Boyz, B.I.G., Junior Mafia, Mobb Deep, a harder L.L Cool J, Fugees, the Roots, etc. etc.
This lasted until about 98 when the utter trash that ruined Rap came upon the scene his name Master P. This guy put out nothing but trash and then used his influence to release albums for the rest of his no limit soldiers at about a pace of one album every 2 weeks this heavily polluted the market, one hit wonders with poor albums came out, Puff Daddy started doing remixes, and that eventually moved onto the trash that is CMB who also blow, some bright spots pop up every now and then like DMX, Ruff Ryders, Canibus and so on
And now rap is stuck with guys who sell out to be commercialized and have songs that are played on the radio. Ja Rule's first album was hard as can be but now does nothing but soft good for the radio songs, same thing with Jay Z its all trash now
So now the only albums i buy are: Wu Tang/affiliates, Redman, Outkast/Dungeon Family and thats about it
and the golden era of rap was from 92 through 97 if you ask me
I mean who can forget the year 1997 when girls all over could be heard singing this famous verse: "Just put it in my mouth"

Shaolin shadowboxing, and the Wu-Tang sword style
If what you say is true, the Shaolin and the Wu-Tang
could be dangerous
Do you think your Wu-Tang sword can defeat me?

En garde, I'll let you try my Wu-Tang style

I LOVE Metal, but yes, even I like old rap. I LOVED Public Enemy: Apocalypse '91, the Enemy Strikes Black.
"Hardcore will never die!!!"

And I just listened to Digital Underground-"Sex Packets" like yesterday. Slick Rick, like Darkhippie said, was the shit too. Run DMC. Beastie Boys. All great.

Nowadays, it seems if you put 100 hot girls in your video, and ride around the hood, you got a hit video. Plus, you don't even need tallent. Just overdub like 14 extra vocal tracks on your own, and you're a triple platinum artist. PLEASE!
