i am not struggling but im moving to a bigger place and paying alot more than im paying now. Sometimes i think rent should be the least of the expenses...or should it??

Does anyone rent an apartment and feel they are struggling to pay it......or feel like all their hard earned money is going to waste?

My father always told me that your rent should not make up more than 1/4 of your expenses. It is a guideline that I have always followed.

I pay a lot for rent, which is a sacrifice I make so I can live where I want to live. I don't feel like the money is going to waste, but I do wish I would pay a little less, maybe i could save a little money. 1/4th?! Hah!

I DEFANLTY overpay for what I have. My place is small but suits my needs. Yes Id love to move into a bigger place but I cant afford it. Only in the very begining when I started living here was I struggling to pay rent only because I wasnt used to it and I thought I could get away with spending more rather than saving more. I learned that lesson on my second week when I didnt have all of it. Oh yea and yes rent shoudl be such a lesser expense! 500 bucks for a room without a kitchen and a seperate bedroom is WAY to much, but your not going to do any better unless you rent a room and share everything with someone.

Buying is always better than renting. It's better during tax time.

For all of the rent I've paid on my apartment I could have owned a condo by now. But as far as rent goes in DC my place is a steal. I love my neighborhood and my apartment's ammenities (size, electricity included, washer and dryer, parking in the back) so it's hard to give it up.

i have a very small studio apartment that i can barely afford. but for now, until i can save enough money for a bigger apartment, this is kind of convenient...i have a 5 mile commute to work, utilities are included in my rent, i can use my landlord's washer and drier whenever for free, and i have a fire place and jacuzzi

I love my apartment and its a struggle to pay the rent every month. Rents in Westchester are crazy (I pay $1450)

My rent is a little more than 1/2 my monthly take home salary

AJ's right about owning. When you pay about the same for a mortgage that you do for rent, and the interest is tax-deductible, it makes good sense.

Plus, you own the property, so when you leave, you sell it for $$$ in your pocket (or towards your next place). You're not starting from the same place each time.

Granted, you don't have a landlord to complain to and fix things, but I find it well worth it.

Thank God I live in Texas. It's SOO much cheaper to live here. I have a 900 sq ft apartment for $580 a month and I'm 10 minutes from work.

I agree owning is better, but you have to know the location is going to at least be semi-permanent. For now, I'd rather rent, but everyone has their problems managing money. Let's not get into credit card debt! :l
