The ''Perfect Storm'' filmmaker plans to shoot a comic-book epic that would turn Warner Bros.' two biggest franchise superheroes against each other

Warner Bros. has had difficulty in recent years getting new ''Batman'' and ''Superman'' pictures off the ground, but that hasn't stopped the studio from greenlighting a movie that would feature both superheroes. In the works is ''Batman vs. Superman,'' which already has a screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker (''Seven'') and a director in Wolfgang Petersen (''The Perfect Storm,'' ''Air Force One''). No stars have been cast yet, though the studio expects to do so within the next month, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Apparently inspired by an old DC Comics side project, the story involves DC heroes Batman and Superman teaming up to fight a menace, only to differ on tactics and turn against each other. ''Superman stands for what is powerful, clear, bright, noble and just; Batman is dark, obsessive and vengeful,'' Petersen tells the Reporter. ''Because they are so different, they will inevitably end up clashing. It will be a battle of the titans.'' He says the film will be character-driven and not just an action spectacle. ''We are not going to go with typical action stars but great actors who will do an action-oriented part.'' (Think Tobey Maguire in ''Spider-Man.'')

Although Petersen says he hopes to shoot the film early next year, Warner Bros. still has two unrelated movies in development featuring the same characters. ''Requiem for a Dream'''s Darren Aronofsky is attached to direct ''Batman: Year One,'' which would be the first Caped Crusader film since 1997. Superman, who hasn't been on screen since 1987, is poised to return in a movie written by J.J. Abrams (''Alias'') and to be directed by McG (''Charlie's Angels'') -- this after the studio spent $140 million commissioning at least three screenplays (including one by Kevin Smith) and doing abortive pre-production on a Superman movie in 1998 that would have had ''Batman'''s Tim Burton directing Nicolas Cage as the Man of Steel. Neither ''Batman: Year One'' nor the Abrams/McG ''Superman'' has a cast or a start date.

why is hollywood only interested in Superman and Batman ?? DC has so many other great characters that would make great movies. look at marvel, they're cranking out movie after movie: X-men(2 is filming now), spider man, hulk, daredevil, blade with more in development.

I always got chills when I hear another comic book movie is in the works. They have had so many misses, and very few hits.

Batman is one of my fave characters. I hate the way the last 2 Batman movies were made and the same can be said about the last 2 Superman movies.

When will these execs just buy a comic book and see how to write a movie? I will give them examples.

Dark Knight Returns, Batman Year One, Long Halloween,
Even the Tower of Babel story line in JLA.

it should also be noted that JJ

"Superman Lives" sounded like the coolest story. Having Superman be an average type was a good twist. And just knowing that Kevin Smith the comic book mark was writing it just made it that much better.

What I would like to see is for the WB to do Elseworlds "Graphic Novel" Animated movies. I think you shoot for 6 of these a year. Do the Kingdom Come story line as a mini-series, The Superman story where he exploits his powers for profit and stories like that.

Batman Vs. Superman is a stupid idea. I have no interest in seeing this and I am a HUGE Superman fan.

As long as nick cage doesn't play superman I'm watching the movie. The Killing Game would have make a good Batman movie, and for the new superman movie should be based on Doomsday

I doubt we'll ever see this film made.

If it does get done, it will probably suck. Why?

''We are not going to go with typical action stars but great actors who will do an action-oriented part.'' (Think Tobey Maguire in ''Spider-Man.'')

Translation: "We're going to hire Ben Affleck to play both Batman AND Superman!"

Besides, we all know who would win the fight - Batman. Batman routinely kicks Superman's ass. He's just too damn smart for the big blue boy scout.

Batman is just martial artist with some fancy gadgets, Superman is a Super Natural being with Super Human abilities. If it were a straight up fight, Superman could kill him.

Plus Superman once gave Batman a Kryptonite bullet to use on him if he ever got out of control.

problem is, we're used to the comic books so you need a PHYSICALL BIG dude to play each one, esp. superman. I can't think of any actors off the top of my head who fit the bill (except Vin Diesel, who can't act to save his own life - but that's the body type we're talking about)
