chris, read the lyrics to "41 shots." (or even just listen to the chorus) He stays very neutral in the argument.

this sig is the masterpiece of the cheesy one
<i>support your local 420: union of brotherhood

living on the road, my friend, was supposed to keep us free and clean.
now you wear you skin like iron, your breath's as hard as kerosene-- townes van zant "the ballad of poncho and lefty"</i>

Chris, with all due respect...

41 reasons

Dark Hippie summed it up best. Did you ever think of actually reading the lyrics and thinking for yourself than listening to what your union boss and the media hype said?

The NYPD insinuating that Springsteen is anti-police is so unbelieveably asinine.

I guess the fact that Bruce helped organize a benefit for a Long Branch police officer who was killed in the line of duty doesn't mean a damn thing.

41 shots
41 shots
41 shots
41 shots
41 shots
41 shots
41 shots
41 shots....
and we'll take that ride
'cross this bloody river
to the other side
41 shots... cut through the night
You're kneeling over his body in the vestibule
Praying for his life

Is it a gun, is it a knife
Is it a wallet, this is your life
It ain't no secret
It ain't no secret
No secret my friend
You can get killed just for living
In your American skin

41 shots
Lena gets her son ready for school
She says "on these streets, Charles
You've got to understand the rules
If an officer stops you
Promise you'll always be polite,
that you'll never ever run away
Promise Mama you'll keep your hands in sight"

Is it a gun, is it a knife
Is it a wallet, this is your life
It ain't no secret
It ain't no secret
No secret my friend
You can get killed just for living
In your American skin

Is it a gun, is it a knife
Is it in your heart, is it in your eyes
It ain't no secret

41 shots... and we'll take that ride
'Cross this bloody river
To the other side
41 shots... got my boots caked in this mud
We're baptized in these waters and in each other's blood

Is it a gun, is it a knife
Is it a wallet, this is your life
It ain't no secret
It ain't no secret
No secret my friend
You can get killed just for living
In your American skin

If anything, the song tells you to respect the police and do what they say, otherwise, a misunderstanding, a language barrier ("American Skin"), or a dark night can lead to an overreaction.

Thanks for assuming that I'm an idiot who just follows the crowd. The crowd, however, in this instance is correct..so i will follow. I just re-read the lyrics, and it still sounds to me like he's anti-cop. The "rules" seem to me to be a bit facetious. Also, I dont recall him ever coming out and saying it was a pro-cop song--or playing it at any cop benefits...hmmmm.

Chris, the song isn't pro-cop or anti-cop. The song is about a mistake that was made and the reprecussions that can happen when an arrest goes wrong.

This whole brouhaha was created because the news was slow that day.

CSN's "Ohio" is about Kent State. Funny how it's OK to write songs about topical events then but it's so taboo now.

Please point out to me which lyrics are anti-cop.

I don't see "Volpe with a plunger" anywhere in there. If Bruce wanted to be anti-NYPD, he could have included references to THAT incident.

And Chris, in case you missed it, Bruce kinda helped raise 130 million for 9/11. Or does "My City of Ruin" during the telethon not ring a bell.

Right, he's anti-NYPD.

Tenbat..you seem to be confusing your cop scandals...Volpe had nothing to do with Diallo, which is what 41 shots is about. Volpe was Louima. I cant point out the anti cop lyrics anymore than u can point out any pro-cop lyrics. I'm not saying its wrong to write/perform this song, just that as a cop, I dont dig it. OKAY? I'm sure the guards at Kent didnt like Ohio, either. (youre not saying that was pro-national guard are ya??) And as for Bruce's contributions to NYC after 9/11. I thank him for it...but that's another topic, isnt it? For one thing it went to nyc--not nypd (dont confuse the 2). Listen, as a bruce fan youre never gonna change your mind, and as a cop, I'm never gonna change mine. NEXT TOPIC!
