View Full Version : Rest In Peace Ted Williams

The greatest hitter in baseball history has passed away.
Not only was he a great baseball player, Williams served in WWII and Korea as a fighter pilot. He missed almost 5 years of playing baseball.
And to think that Williams almost became a Yankee. The story goes like this: The Yankee and Red Sox owners agreed to trade Joe DiMaggio for Williams, straight up. DiMaggio would have benefitted from "The Green Monster", Williams from the "short porch" in Yankee Stadium. It made sense, and there was a handshake agreement. However, both owners were intoxicated and the next day the Boston owner changed his mind.
So rest in peace "Splendid Splinter". They don't make them like him anymore.

I think what made Ted Williams so great is the numbers he managed to put up despite missing 5 full seasons during his prime. Just as when people ask "What if Mickey Mantle hadn't blown out his knee?", people will ask "What more would Ted Williams have accomplished had he not missed those 5 seasons?"

The greatest Red Sox player of them all (well, maybe except for Babe Ruth before "the sale").

I am here in Cape Cod, MA for the holiday weekend and have been watching the local news. There is no other news than the passing of Ted Williams. This man was revered here. The fact that the news program is 1/2 hour long and the first 15 minutes were devoted solely to Ted Williams shows you how important he was to this state. If the President or the Pope passed away, they might get as much airtime - but I doubt it.

The thing that amazed me about Ted Williams was that during the Korean War, he was John Glenn's wingman. Now that would have been a cool unit to serve in.

I have a book that talks about the All Century team. It projects Williams stats if he didn't miss those years fighting in the wars.

Here they are:

HR - 712
RBI - 2,589
HITS - 3617
AVG - .344
2B - 717
3B - 115

Pretty amazing!

I met him once at a card show. He was a great guy. We talked real briefly about the H.O.F. He just thoroughly loved baseball and it showed.

They had a moment of silence for him at the Phillies game last night. A great American and a great ball player who will be missed. Rest In Peace Ted.

It was a different era when ballplayers would give up fame and fortune to serve their country, and none did so more admirably than The Splendid Splinter.

You'll be sorely missed, Ted. May you rest in peace.

The fucked up thing is the whole time I'm reading that article I thought it was refering to Ferrel, famed sports-talk jock, 'cause who the fuck knows how his name is spelled.
