KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (July 1) - U.S. planes bombed a village in central Afghanistan on Monday after the U.S. military said American forces came under fire. Afghans said villagers were celebrating a wedding and that scores were killed and injured, including many women and children.

Reports of the incident were conflicting. The Pentagon insisted the aircraft attacked a legitimate hostile target but suggested an errant bomb may have caused civilian casualties.

At Bagram air base, U.S. military spokesman Col. Roger King said an AC-130 gunship, a B-52 bomber and other aircraft joined the attack after coalition ground forces came under fire.

''We understand that there were some civilian casualties in the operation, but we do not yet know how many casualties or how they occurred,'' King said. ''The United States expresses its deepest sympathies to those who have lost their loved ones.''

He said at least four of the injured were treated by U.S. forces.

Bismullah, communications chief of Uruzgan province, said Afghans in the village of Kakarak, about 175 miles southwest of Kabul, were firing weapons in the air during the wedding as is common in rural Afghanistan when U.S. planes attacked, killing about 40 people and injuring 70.

Noor Mohammed, leader of neighboring Gujran district, reported the same casualty figures and said Afghans were ''upset because innocent people have died.''

In the southern city of Kandahar, where many of the victims were taken, Afghans said the attack began about 2 a.m. and lasted for about two hours. A nurse at the Kandahar hospital, Sher Mohammed, said he heard that about 120 people were killed.

Hospital officials said most of the dead and injured were women and children. One of the injured, a 6-year-old girl named Paliko, was brought to the hospital still wearing her party dress. Villagers said all members of her family were killed.

Another injured child, 7-year-old Malika, lost her mother, father, a brother and a sister, according to neighbors who brought her to the hospital.

''We have many children who are injured and who have no family,'' nurse Mohammed Nadir said. ''Their families are gone. The villagers brought these children and they have no parents. Everyone says that their parents are dead.''

In Washington, a Pentagon spokesman said a coalition air reconnaissance patrol that was flying over Uruzgan province reported coming under anti-aircraft artillery fire. Other coalition aircraft opened fire on the target.

Meanwhile, a Pentagon official said a B-52 was on a strike mission against a cave complex in Uruzgan - an event that appeared unrelated to the reported anti-aircraft artillery fire. The B-52 may have dropped a bomb that went astray, he said.

In Kandahar, one survivor, Abdul Qayyum, told reporters at the Mir Wais Hospital that after the attack, the Americans came to the area demanding to know ''who fired on the helicopters.''

''I said 'I don't know' and one of the soldiers wanted to tie my hands but someone said he is an old man and out of the respect they didn't,'' he said.

The injured also included Haji Mohammed Anwar, who Afghans said was a friend of President Hamid Karzai and one of the first prominent local figures who rose up against the former Taliban regime.

The bombing occurred in the same province where U.S. special forces killed 21 Afghans when they stormed buildings in Khas Uruzgan village on Jan. 23 looking for al-Qaida and Taliban forces. The Pentagon later acknowledged that none of those killed were al-Qaida or Taliban, but Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld cleared the Americans of any wrongdoing.

In an interview last week with The Associated Press, Karzai expressed concern that innocent Afghan civilians are being caught in the cross fire in the war on terrorism.

''I will definitely want the Afghan civilians, the Afghan villages to be immune from accidental damage,'' Karzai said. ''To be sure that they do not receive accidental firing at them. To make sure that our

To think a war can be waged without the loss of some innocent lives is foolish, no matter how painful it is when it happens.

And Ryan - how many innocents were killed on 9/11 ?

Don't even think of trying to paint us as "bad guys" in all of this.

Mental Note For All Afghans: When your country is at war and there are massive bombers, scouts who can call for close air support, and the most powerful army in the world patrolling your airspace - DON'T SHOOT RIFLES INTO THE AIR!

Keep that in mind ;)

i understand that. Those lives were taken by terrorists, who are the enemy in this "war on terrorism", and as far as i know, the U.S. arent terrorists. By the U.S. also taking innocent lives its like sinking to their level. the difference is that the U.S. didnt intend to kill those innocent people, and the terrorists did, they thought they were under attack, it was a mistake, i apologize, and upon realizing this the title should have been "U.S. accidently kills more innocent people".

The US rarely kills innocents, and never intentionally. This is why it gets so much press when American soldiers are accused of killing innocents.

Don't get me started on how jackasses like you lost a war for us in Vietnam. The North Vietnamese made civilian casualties a centerpiece of their operation, therefore it never made the news. The same goes for the Taliban. Then you idiots protest our own policies rather than theirs and the next thing you know, we are fleeing a country with our tails between our legs.

I have no sympathy for these animals, especially when they've been cheering our deaths and praising allah for it. It's a shame that people have to die, but I'm numb to the plight of these people.

There's no real way to get peace and unity. Their culture counts on on us to be "nice." Explain your case to the animals. Tell me how far you get.

Not so much because I'm a warmonger, or that I think we should, as a country, bomb the shit out of everything that looks at us funny.

But because I can't FUCKING STAND peaceniks like this.

Enjoy your pacifist leanings, my friend, as thousands of brave men & women shed their blood and lives for you to be able to sit and spew this bullshit.

When did the term 'civilian casualty' come into use? It seems like relatively new language, It sounds a lot like a left wing, liberal buzzword invented, oooooh I don't know, sometime during the sixties, to try and make us feel guilty about waging war on the wicked bastards in this world and protecting our national interests. Look people, don't believe the hype. Do you know how many civilians were bombed in WWII? On both sides? Intentionally? Look at it objectively, without any prejudices. It would be impossible to wage any type of successful war without blowing up non military personnel. Sure, we don't aim for them, we're more civilised than that, but accidents do happen. This wasn't even an acccident. This was our soldiers responding to a situation where they thought they were under attack, but I digress. Look, 'civilian casualty' is a meaningless word. Of course you're gonna have 'civilian casualties', dumbass! We're dropping God knows what size payloads on them. I don't understand where the indignation and questions come from. People are like, "I agreed with the idea of dropping ridiculously large explosives on the country but, I didn't think anyone was actually going to get killed by them." It's war, people die. That's the point.

It's funny that the USA plays by these arcticles of war that no one else adheres to. We've weakened ourselves by doing this. We're a civilised people fighting a civilised war against an uncivilised opponent who will do whatever it takes. The reason it's so easy for a muslim to take his own life in a suicide bombing is because its the only way he assures his entrance into heaven. There are NO innocents in the minds of these people. Destroy the infidels and die trying you get an express ticket into heaven. Every other way in is pretty much hit and miss but if he dies in one of their "holy wars" then he's guaranteed a place in heaven according to the Koran. How scary is that?

Stop asking the Fiend how he feels! He never feels good and he hates you ALL!!

And let's not forget the Cole bombing, The barracks bombing in Saudi Arabia, (2) American Embassies, and the first WTC bombing. All planned in this same region by people with the backing of the Taliban. I guess now that the Taliban is out of power their supporters are gone? Just who killed Daniel Pearl? Who is shooting at our aircraft & men in Afganistan? It's real simple, shoot a gun in the air in the direction of a US soldier or aircraft and prepare to get your asses blown off. Our soldiers have a right to defend themselves when they feel threatened.

It's all well and good to want to peacefully resolve problems. But when you are attacked and someone is trying to take your life, the time for the touchy feely trying to understand their feelings crap has come to an end until one of you is dead. They don't know and could care less how you feel. How are you going to deal with that mentality? Rolling over and saying, "Do what you want.", doesn't cut it and never has.

If anyone is still paying attention to the news it has been reported that it may not have been a bomb. It may have been a retaliation strike on an Anti Aircraft gun that was firing at American aircraft that were providing ground support.

My question is: "What part of the wedding ceremony is it that you fire at well armed aircraft and troops?"
