View Full Version : A Lesson About Comedy

This is long, but interesting and funny, cause it was humliating for awhile.

I believe that originality is the key to success in the entertainment industry. Thats why I hate bands like Default that copy other bands styles, comics who rip off other shows jokes and some of the kids in my Drama Dept, who cant think of a good joke to save thier lives, so they steal from shows like SNL.

I write my own monolouges, skits and scenes because I like it, Im good at writing stuff, and I have a good knowledge of the news and the world. And thats where I to date, have learned my biggest lesson in comedy.

Our drama class had to perform monolouges for another class (not drama) and our class. While most of the kids tooks stories they had heard on radio and tv, I decided to write a stand-up routine. I based it off Jim Norton's dark humour and Added my Cynical outlooks as well as my own dark touches.

The monolouge was about NASCAR, The Truth Ads and Celebrities I wanna kill.

I made fun of that fact that people get drunk just to watch car drive in circles and how feebleminded they are because the most excitement in those races to them is a car crash.

I made fun of Kids smoke and drink because they dont wanna be like those gayass TRUTH kids who are just adverstising cigarettes, not preventing teens from buying them. Of course its funny how Phillip Morris produces those ads. Good marketing decision on thier part, get a bunch of Fah-gots to be trendy and stop teenage smoking, those guys are genuises.

And I trashed celebrities that are all over MTV, like Eminem, who with his new album is trying to tell us hes still conterversial, and that we shouldnt forget about him, cause hes still "with it".

I started, and Finished........early.......not because the teacher asked me to, but because I wanted to end it early.

I bombed.

Maybe one or two laughs from the people who understood what I was getting at (mainly older kids and a few of my buddies) I didnt even go into the celebritys i wanna kill, cause I felt horrible. Although my buddies where there with some support.

I looked over what I had written, and realized my major flaw. It wasnt humour for a teenage audience, because they don't read newspapers or watch the news. I bombed because I overlooked that fact that they aren't into the news and that stuff like I am. Another factor, I had talked about the same stuff with and older kid (a senior) and he thought it was hilarous and actually used one of my jokes I said in the monolouge with his friends. they laughed, but my class didnt when I told it. Cause they are oblivious to thier surrondings.

I learned two things on that day,

One: Make sure you know your audience, this monolouge would have gone over better with older kids, chain smokers and nascar haters alike. But not 15-16 year old teens.

Two: I tried, and thats what counts right now. It's a hard to get a gig of stand-up at a bar or tv show, but the more I "practice" the better I'll get, and thats what Ive taken out of this the most.

Hopefully youve learned something about my generation. And hopefully this also will kinda let you know what I like to do. I know this is gibberish to some of you, or just another Rant to others. But I hope that you enjoyed my pain and humilation as much as I did.

Seeyuh Buddays.

When John Cleese of Monty Python was in college, he wrote and performed his own skits. He didn't always get a lot of laughs. But a producer for the BBC saw that he had a natural sense of humor and, most importantly, he wrote his own material. On Saturday Night Live, it is not just the person who can do the best impressions or mug to the camera the most. It's the person who can write the most original and thought-provoking things who will always have a job in the entertainment industry. Look at Norton. He's getting more popularity and recognition every day because people are starting to realize that humor doesn't have to be sugar-coated. He's doing comedy in a way that hasn't really been done before. And, again, HE WRITES HIS OWN MATERIAL.

Keep doing things your way DC Reed. Be honest, and call things the way you see them.

Dude, fuck your audience. I've been doing stand up and your audience shouldn't take away from your truth. If you do a joke and no one laughs, keep going. When you perform, you're inviting the audience into your world. If they don't get you, just keep flowing. Eventually, they'll come in. Other than that, get stage time and tape your shows. DON'T START A LAME ASS BOOK OF RULES!

Dude, anyone, somebody, submit a show into WNEW! FAST!!! DO IT NOW!!!

There is nothing more exhilerating than pointing out the shortcomings of others, is there?

Bro, I am a writer for a news website (think Time meets MAD magazine) where I guarantee that most people who read it (and believe me it ain't many) even catch most of the jokes, but we keep doing it anyway. If you like it and you're having a good time doing it right now, that's all that matters. Everybody has to start somewhere. Stick with it man

first lesson: never explain a joke. it's never funny if you do.

I could have but I would have been lying. The onion is fictional stories/articles. The one that I write for is actually searching for common sense in actual stories, for the most part anyway (believe me it's hard to come by). Maybe I didn't use the best examples to reference.

Stealing material is taboo in the industry, but sometimes the material is so good, you can't help but do it.

How do you get over that?

Footnote and bibliography. Read it at the end of your act. Reserve 3-5 minutes before the end of your act.

Their not all gems

i posted this a few days after i joined, so i was still trying to "join the gang".

But anyway, my policy on other peoples material is Ill say it, but ill give credit to the auther after or before I say it.

I have a budday who steals from Stephen Lynch and O+A constantly, its pathetic.
