This is long, but interesting and funny, cause it was humliating for awhile.
I believe that originality is the key to success in the entertainment industry. Thats why I hate bands like Default that copy other bands styles, comics who rip off other shows jokes and some of the kids in my Drama Dept, who cant think of a good joke to save thier lives, so they steal from shows like SNL.
I write my own monolouges, skits and scenes because I like it, Im good at writing stuff, and I have a good knowledge of the news and the world. And thats where I to date, have learned my biggest lesson in comedy.
Our drama class had to perform monolouges for another class (not drama) and our class. While most of the kids tooks stories they had heard on radio and tv, I decided to write a stand-up routine. I based it off Jim Norton's dark humour and Added my Cynical outlooks as well as my own dark touches.
The monolouge was about NASCAR, The Truth Ads and Celebrities I wanna kill.
I made fun of that fact that people get drunk just to watch car drive in circles and how feebleminded they are because the most excitement in those races to them is a car crash.
I made fun of Kids smoke and drink because they dont wanna be like those gayass TRUTH kids who are just adverstising cigarettes, not preventing teens from buying them. Of course its funny how Phillip Morris produces those ads. Good marketing decision on thier part, get a bunch of Fah-gots to be trendy and stop teenage smoking, those guys are genuises.
And I trashed celebrities that are all over MTV, like Eminem, who with his new album is trying to tell us hes still conterversial, and that we shouldnt forget about him, cause hes still "with it".
I started, and Finished........early.......not because the teacher asked me to, but because I wanted to end it early.
I bombed.
Maybe one or two laughs from the people who understood what I was getting at (mainly older kids and a few of my buddies) I didnt even go into the celebritys i wanna kill, cause I felt horrible. Although my buddies where there with some support.
I looked over what I had written, and realized my major flaw. It wasnt humour for a teenage audience, because they don't read newspapers or watch the news. I bombed because I overlooked that fact that they aren't into the news and that stuff like I am. Another factor, I had talked about the same stuff with and older kid (a senior) and he thought it was hilarous and actually used one of my jokes I said in the monolouge with his friends. they laughed, but my class didnt when I told it. Cause they are oblivious to thier surrondings.
I learned two things on that day,
One: Make sure you know your audience, this monolouge would have gone over better with older kids, chain smokers and nascar haters alike. But not 15-16 year old teens.
Two: I tried, and thats what counts right now. It's a hard to get a gig of stand-up at a bar or tv show, but the more I "practice" the better I'll get, and thats what Ive taken out of this the most.
Hopefully youve learned something about my generation. And hopefully this also will kinda let you know what I like to do. I know this is gibberish to some of you, or just another Rant to others. But I hope that you enjoyed my pain and humilation as much as I did.
