What do you think should be done? I think they should build the world's tallest building to replace the towers. If you've been reading Newsday lately, it looks like we'll at least see one tower that is the same size as the twin towers.

we were talking about this in class a few weeks ago.
the families of the victims want something lowkey, and i'd have to agree with them. yes, it'd hurt a bit seeing something so small... but.. i dont know.
as for having at least one building as tall as the towers... maybe.

i think if they turn that site into a memorial we lose...
FUCK the memorial.
the memorial should be an exact duplication of the old towers with modern building methods and flak cannons mounted on the roof to take out fuckers who try to fuck with them.
build the memorial in the lobby of the towers if you have to...
but they're going back up

I agree that they should rebuild the towers better, stronger and taller than they were before.

At first I also felt they should be rebuilt but think about this for a moment. First how many people would feel comfortable working above the 60th or 70 th floor? Secondly there is a glut of office space in Manhattan now and this could only serve to depress the market even more. Psychologically yes rebuild but think of all the factors first .

We should go with two towers at a few more stories...my logic being simple like this. There are that many people to fill jobs, and Americans have short term memories...Just never forget the first...there are that many people to fill jobs..

At first I didn't want to see the towers rebuilt, but now I absolutly do, I just want them built in a way that assures the fact they will never ever fall again! <P>

Rebuild the towers. I know I for one wouldn't have a problem working in the upper floors, I'm not gonna live in fear because some creep with a rag on his head who lives in a cave doesn't like me because I'm not a muslim or whatever. Maybe on top we could have missile launchers pointed at Mecca or something.

I agree Jeff.
The Navy's Phalanx weapon system would be an ideal means of protecting the buildings. They are used by our surface fleet.

Last i read, they'll have a final design ready some time in October.
As far as what they'll build, it hasnt been decided yet.
In my opinion...
Build bigger than ever.
By not doing so looks like we're backing down in fear.
God forbid this happens, but I'd much rather an existing structure with more history NOT be the next target. It's kind of a fucked up sad logic but, If we build bigger, whatever they build would likely be the new target. If we dont build, the empire state building,or the statue of liberty would be likely next.

I say build the world's tallest. Bring it back to NY.
People say it'll be too tall they'll just hit it with planes again, but people forget that the height has little to do with it. The pentagon is only 5 stories tall, and they still hit that with a plane.
So even 5 story walk ups are vunderable. Not matter what they build there, it will forever be a target simply for what it represents, as is the Sears tower. Should we knock off 30 floors of that just to bring the profile down a bit? No.

I think we should rebuild the
towers. Just to prove that no
matter what is done that this city
and this country will rebuild and
be stronger than before.

They're not going to put up REALLY tall towers again. NO ONE will work up that high anymore, I don't care if BATMAN is up there defending the top of it.
Building a bunch of smaller buildings in the area to equal the square footage lost in the attacks would be good.
But DEFINETLY rebuild! My Union brothers need to keep in work! You can put a huge memorial in the Courtyard of the new complex.

The Navy's Phalanx weapon system would be an ideal means of protecting the buildings. The Phalanx system is basically a machine gun guided by a computer. It is also a "last resort" weapon- activated when the target gets through most of the primary defenses. We need a weapon on there that could take out a target from a good distance.
I think that the towers should be rebuilt- and better than ever. Just to show these guys that they are not living up to their "terrorist" moniker. Let's not let them make us do something because it's "safer". We should do what we've always done, as we've always done it. Break new ground, move society foward.

I'm a tree hugger who dislikes guns. But I'll even agree to a huge building with cannons or maybe they can invent a "force field". Shit... they invented radar to win WWll like....overnight. They can protect buildings if they really want to.

I hate seeing that empty space every time I look downtown, I want like a huge 110 story pyramid or a giant monolith of some sort with gargoyles and angels and cant forget about the gun turrets like the ones in the rebel starfighters with 720 degree rotation action and reinforced asbestos plated beams.

WOW, this is a lot more pro-rebuild people than there were when this topic was up a few months ago. Time does heal wounds.
Jeff, I love the people that only want a memorial. Do they honestly think that the new towers would forget that an attack ever happened? The replacement will undoubtedly have a memorial. If they don't want to have big office towers, I like Ron's idea of just building a huge tower for tourists that would be a big part of the skyline.
I know I talk about China-US relations a lot, but they do plan to build the world's tallest building within the next decade. I don't think we should let them keep this honor for long.

it just doesn't make sense...those buildings served a functional and symbolic purpose, even BEFORE 9/11...they were symbols of our economic and technological might...
fuck China...we should have the biggest, the baddest, and tallest buildings in the world...
they already have the best take-out but that's ALL IM GIVING THEM...

A pyramid 110 stories tall would have to have a base of 1720 square feet, or roughly 30 acres, so that's not feasible.
I like the idea of a monolith. This large obsidian featurless stucture. But built to be a usable office building.

What is the tallest pyramid possible in that space? I am totally intrigued by this idea.

Well, the great Pyramid of Giza has a base of roughly 13 acres(it's all measured in cubits) and they have, i believe 16 acres to work with... So i guess somehing slightly larger than the great pyramid.
See the problem with a pyramid, a perfect pyramid, is that you need such a wide base.
But it is a cool idea though...

My favorite plan so far is Derek Turner's Plan to build the world's biggest structure there. Got to www.wtc2002.com to see it. This is what America is all about people.

The real-estate is too valuable and there will be some Corporate building built but they should leave at least a 1/2 acre with two replica's of the WTC, approx 3 stories high with the names of the deceased engraved or displayed on them. Then there should be a large statue of a policeman and a fireman, they should be a story high and looking up at the replica's.
I love this country but am not blind to some of it's corruption... To me these building represented MONEY... And people were saying that they represented America, which basically turned me off. I believe America is best represented by the War Memorials, Constitution, and Declaration Of Independance, and all of the Engineers that helped build the country. They're were many Brokerage companies that resided in the WTC. Look what has happened with ENRON and Merrill Lynch. Merrill had to pay a 100 million dollar fine. for basically "ripping" people off. To me the majority of the Brokerage firms were doing the same but the SEC probably does not have the resources to go after all.
The Justice system, if you have money you can get away with murder... That doesn't sound too fair to me...
Anyway, had to vent a bit...
F any new WTC's, build a Memorial to the Police and Fireman and let the Yankees pay for it...

I went to Ground Zero today for the first time. I imagined what it would be like with that proposal of the new 4 tower idea, and I think it would be extravagant. It would stand out and let everyone know we're strong and we will stand tall and proud. I love the idea of putting a tree for each person that died there. This is a great idea. Either way, whether it will be turned solely into a memorial or another building, hopefully things will get underway before September 11, 2002.
