Like many people, I have seen this flick hundreds of times, and people always seem to love talking about it, so...what is your favorite scene?
Me? I love Michael's hit on McCluskey and Sollazo, I also love Sonny beating Carlo..I see a Rheingold Beer truck in the background!

Vito's funeral. Major turning point in the film, but I like it cause it was filmed in Calvary Cemetary in Long Island City, Queens, in the precinct I used to work. I used to eat my breakfast right where all their limos were. All the headstones/mausoleums are really there...except for "Corleone, " of course.

Whew, Heckler! This is virtually impossible to answer...but the first scene I thought of - maybe because it has so many bits of great dialogue - is...
When Tom Hagen flies to LA, to try and "persuade" Woltz into hiring Johnny for the film role. Then leaves, because "Mr. Corleone likes to hear bad news right away ". ( I know that isn't verbatim )
"I'm German-Irish."
"Well, My Kraut-Mic Friend."
SIGH! Too many to choose from..like picking a favorite song!

I always loved the scene with Kay and Michael fighting:
"It was an abortion Michael,
an abortion"..and then when she shouts "Because all of this must end"!!!
Incredible.

The horse head does it for me. That would just scare the s*** out of me! There are too many to list. But I always loved when Michael joins the family because of what happened to his dad. He becomes such a bad ass!

I love Michael's rescue of his father in the unguarded hospital ("I'm with you now"). Also, the tense scene of the assassination of Solozzo & corrupt cop McCluskey in the Italian neighborhood restaurant.

Okay my Kraut-Mick friend, Johnny will never get that part because I hate that pinko punk and I'm going to run him out of the Movies. And I'll tell you why. He ruined one of Woltz Brothers' most valuable proteges. For five years I had this girl under training; singing lessons! Acting lessons! Dancing lessons! We spent hundreds of thousands of dollars--I was going to make her a star. I'll be even more frank, just to show you that I'm not a hard-hearted man, that it wasn't all dollars and cents. That girl was beautiful and young and innocent and she was the greatest piece of ass I've ever ad and I've had them all over the world. Then Johnny comes along with that olive oil voice and guinea charm and she runs off. She threw it all away to make me look ridiculous. A MAN IN MY POSITION CANNOT AFFORD TO BE MADE TO LOOK RIDICULOUS! <P>

Everything about the portrayal is stated with his body language, facial expressions, with no overacting at all. Compare that to most of his other roles (such as Scarface, Scent of A Woman, Heat, etc., which while good were scenery-chewing), and it seems like two different actors.</p>

<p>For Part One, I loved when Sonny was gunned down at the Toll Booth. It upset me at first, but It was a great scene. </p><p>For Part Two, which Is the best of the three, It has to be Robert Deniro following Don Fanucci. The tapping of the light and the towel catching on fire always makes me tense. </p><p>For Part Three, I enjoyed watching Micheal lose it in the kitchen, but it is certainly when Micheal's Daughter is Killed. I knew the movie was almost over by that point...</p>

<p>Part I: They take Sally away and you see Tom standing by the window with this cool expression and later when Kay ask's him about the killings and he says: No. Then she goes in the other room to get them drinks and you can see the capo's kissing his hand and closing the door. And the part where they just killed Carlo and you can see Mike walking away like a true Don.</p><p>Part II: Michaels visit to Pentangeli, Fredo and Mike in Havanna and Fredo's killing. And the part where he closes the door in Kay's face. So cool.</p><p>Part III: THE BEST! I have a stone in my shoe... And the end! WOW! A real tearjerker. The great and dangerous Don holding his dying daughter. Then, the silent scream with Mascagni's music coming to an end and then you see Kay looking at Michael like she finally understands. Amazing. The greatest ending for the greatest trilogy.</p>

<p>In my opinion the best scene in the movie, and any movie for that matter, is when Michael make his transformation from the innocent Army boy to the machiavellian mobster he becomes. They are all sitting around discussing what to do about Sollozzo and his police protection. Michael is sitting in the leather chair and he stilll has the bruise from getting his jaw broken at the hospital and is on the left side of the frame. He starts to explain how he will wack both Sollozzo and the Seargent. As he is explaining how the plan to everyone the camera is panning in on him until finally there is no one else in the frame except Michael and the black back drop of the leather chair.....of course their first instinct is to laugh at the naive college boy, but they say the genius of the plan in the end.</p><p>"It's not personal Sonny, just business."</p>

My favorite scenes are both in the second one. The first is near the end, and it's basically just Michael dressed almost all in back sitting by the lake. It really sums up just how far he's fallen to "rise up" in that world, and just how truly alone he is and everything he's lost. That scene alone makes everything about the third film totally superfluous. The second is the flashback scene at the end of the film when we see everyone getting together for a family dinner. It's really heartbreaking to see all of these people who ended up dead or betrayers (usually both). I'm actually glad they couldn't get Brando to come back for it...it really just emphasizes how much of a presence Don Corleone is even when he's not there.
Godfather I: The scene with Michael & Vito in the garden. Vito is explaining to Michael how the attempted coup will come after he passes. It's clear that this is a conversation that they've had a number of times and Michael, while bored with the conversation is still paying great attention.
It reminds me of being a kid and having the same conversation with older family members. The conversation means the world to them, it bores you, but you don't realize that it has value.
The Don then just blurts out "I like to drink wine more than I used to."....
Godfather II. The scene in Cuba. Fredo, Johnny O & Superman. When Fredo drunkenly reveals that he & Johnny O have seen the Superman act before...the look on Michael's face is probably Pacino's finest acting moment in the trilogy. His face has this look of rage, heartbreak and tragedy.
I'll just pretend that Godfather III didn't happen.

Damn, that's a good one. Good call on Pacino's acting in that scene. I'm always impressed when actors can so naturally produce such a range of emotions all without talking or really much body language. The only other time I've been that impressed with an actor doing something similar in a "western" film is in Boogie Nights when they're trying to rob Alfred Molina and there's the long shot of just Dirk's face as he goes through this obvious flood of thoughts and emotions before finally deciding, "fuck it, we need to go."
Ironically, both scenes involve freakishly huge schlongs. Go figure.
I'll just pretend that Godfather III didn't happen.
If it was its own movie and had nothing to do with the first two, I think people wouldn't be so hard on it. It's just anti-climactic and too long after the fact when compared to the first two. At the end of the day, I'm glad I won it. Though it bugs me people dwell on Sofia Coppola as the worst thing in the flick. George Hamilton taking over for Robert Duvall is much, much, MUCH worse.

I agree with you, but then again III would make zero sense as a stand-alone movie. The story is too long and the whole thing with the church is just too much. It's like Coppola was trying to explain the nature of human existence through the Corleone family.
And I totally agree with you on the Sofia Coppola bitching. The plot weakness of her character has nothing to do with her acting. (It's not great, but then again...how many people were good in III?) And seriously, not paying Robert Duvall is a real crime as that guy can act.

Since I like to find some sort of comedy in even movies like Godfather I gotta say these are my favorites:
#1- Don Fanucci's death scene in GF2. What a dick wad walkin around with people kissing his ring! (Fanucci fan since day 1). Plus it shows how vicious Vito could be when needed.
#2-Sonny's murder and Vitos reaction.
#3- Moe Green getting shot in the eye/ fast forward to Rothstein bitching about it in GF2 and Micheal just calmly says nothing.
