Why?

What's the attraction of AOL? It's almost as expensive as DSL but with dial-up service.

And they force their software down your throat.

So why is it so popular?

I think cause it is easy to use..."why fix something that is not broken" is what a lot of people are probably thinking. AOL has done, what most other corporations have done, is buy up all the competition so that there cant possibly be anything to go against the status quo...

It would probably be cheaper to get a DSL line (which is what I have) than it would be to keep AOL...I mean 23 dollars for what?? To get flooded with porno ads?? Ugggghhhh...and dont you hate the way that they trick you sometimes "Hi we havent talked in a while". So I am thinking that it is someone I know from college and wammo an ad for "hot teen sluts waiting for you"...was cute the first couple of times but ecccchhhhhh...

That pretty much sums it up. That and I'm too lazy to switch.

I will admit though, I haven't been booted off much the last couple years, I get pretty good connection speed considering I'm still using dial-up, and it's only like $25/mo.

However, if anyone knows of DSL that's not much more, let me know. Cheapest I've seen is $50.

I only pay $29.99 a month for cable modem. It's the deal Cablevision gives if you already have cable TV.

Pantera, you're getting robbed!

So am I. I live inQueens where there's Time Warner, and for their cable service, road runner, it costs about 40-50 bucks a month. However, I didn't fall into that trap, and I'm ditchin' out 25 bucks a month for regular, crappy, AOL.

Same here - and I would never be able to live without my cable modem. I wouldn't suggest DSL - I had it a year ago and it was expensive, and the connection crapped out constantly.

Cable Broadband is not offered in my area either (although I just got a notice from Cablevision that they are installing some fiber near me, which will allow them to provide Optimum Online soon). I've been considering DSL (which is available in my area) and I would get it through my current provider, Earthlink, whom I inherited when they bought out my provider.

Yeah, I've heard the Earthlink horror stories as well, but, I've usually only had minor problems (low connection speed because of a bad phone jack). I just don't want to change my email address, and if I go with Verizon or Optimum (when it's available) I have to change the email address, web address, etc. I hope that the increased competition will drive the price down, too.

AOL? Never used it, never will.

Because you have to live within a certain distance of the cable router, otherwise the signal is too weak.

I love my $30 cable modem.

I have my cable modem through a partnership with TWC and Earthlink. It is basically Roadrunner but you get to keep your Earthlink address and still get cable service. I apy $41.95 because I do not have cable tv. I had DSL and I like the cable better.
