NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City may soon be issuing alerts about possible threats to the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty, perhaps over the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, a law enforcement official said on Tuesday.

"It's based on uncorrobated information as a result of interviews done with detainees, mainly regarding threats to New York landmarks," the official said.

He said the information was passed on to the joint terrorism task force in New York.

"The police commissioner out of an abundance of caution has ramped up security measures. ... Threats are against various landmarks including the Statue of Liberty," the official said.

CBS radio reported that Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly is meeting with his staff to see what details of the threats should be made public.

A New York police department spokesman could not confirm the information.

Top Bush administration officials have stepped up their warnings in recent days that extremists could launch new attacks after more than 3,000 people were killed in airline strikes on Sept. 11.

I would worry about your Brooklyn bridge- a landmark and TONS of people every day, every hour... ya know? Or subways- damn i didnt even think of that. Now im all paranoid.

Jonkeu, the news is supposed to make you paranoid, thats what those bastards do. there is no reason to be scared, hell according to Chaney, "an attack can come tomorrow, next week, next year" we just don't know. it's pointless to worry about it
when it happens, it happens, and it will suck but we can't really stop it. people have to understnad this is now the world we live in, and its gonna be like this for a long time.

you want to feel better, go outside adn get away from the news and TV for a bit, it's a beautiful day.
