View Full Version : opengl problem with xp

After Furie assured me that there are people on the board who know about computers, I decided to post my problem.
I'm trying to play "Star Wars Jedi Knights 2: Jedi Outcast", on my computer, and every time I do, the console comes up and gives the dumb "GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem" report after a list of what it did to try and run the game.
Now, I have Windows XP, which doesn't fully support opengl, and has the most common trouble with it. I have no video card, and Compaq don't have any graphics drivers to solve the problem, although their site lead me on to believe as if they did. What do I do? I feel as if I just wasted 50 bucks.

I had the same prob. my pc is too old, so I'm building a new one.
The solution depends on what type of video card you're running. Basically, you're going to have to get new drivers. You DO have a video card, even if you think you don't, but it may be built into the motherboard. I would do a google search on your Compaqq model to see how others fixed it.

try this
open C windowswin.ini. look for the heading "[Drawdib]" under that heading if there is a line saying "DVA=0" delete it. reset your computer and your game should run fine. (remember to back up win.ini just in case)

Angry Missy, I tried that the second time I saw the message. The weird thing is, there's no "[Drawdib]" heading in my Windows.ini file.
Jon, I've been searching all day yesterday, but I'll try again. Even the compaq website couldn't help me.

Jynx-
More information is needed, specifically, what computer/video board you are using. Did you buy the computer with XP installed or upgrade yourself? I don't know if they are still including it in XP-installed models, but Compaq included an applet in the control panel called "Compaq Diagnostics" that would list all of the hardware components of the system.
First step is to identify your Video board/card- Compaq uses ATI, nVidia, and a couple of others. Searching Compaq's support site (www.compaq.com/support) would tell you the likely board. You should be able to identify it by checking the hardware setup in the Device Manager as well.
If you have a fast 'net connection, there is a program on http://www.opengl.org that will identify and download the latest drivers for your video card. READ THE WARNINGS, though. Some drivers (such as the ATI) are not certified, and may cause stability problems (especially with XP).
Another thing that you can do is check Lucasarts website and see if there are program switches that you can use to try to adjust the video settings before the program runs. Turning off some of the higher end graphic effects like light flares and high detail might allow the program to run. Lucasarts should also have a list of issues that have been reported with various video cards and Operating Systems.
Probably one of the better solutions is to purchase an AGP video card to add to your system. Many of them are much less expensive these days. One that supports OpenGL, and DirectX can be added to your system, and if the motherboard-based video card you have is also AGP, you can perform multiple monitor viewing for various programs if you're so inclined.
Let me know if you need more info, I'm ACT certified (now called APS) and have a few inside tracks...
*Edited to correct website address*

Well Willee, when I bought the computer, the operating system installed onto it was Winows Millenium. I upgraded to XP professional about a month ago. Using a program that identifies your hardware called 'Sandra', I found my graphics controller. I'm not sure if it's my video board, but I'll include the name. It's the "Intel(r) 8280e DC-133 System and Graphics Controller".
Compaq's support site hasn't helped me much. It provided a link which was described as the link for the download of the driver, but it really wasn't. OpenGL's website isn't coming up for some reason. I keep getting the same error asking if I typed the site in correctly, even when I clicked on a link to them from Microsoft's site.
If more information is needed, please tell me. And thank you all for your work and efforts in helping me solve my problem.

Jynx-
A search on the graphic card you gave me seemed to get me nowhere (That Compaq/HP merge is screwing things up already). What model PC is this? A Presario? Give me the model info, and I'll track the drivers/info down for you.

After getting a tip from a friend of mines, I hunted down the driver for two hours on Intel's support website. The game runs fine, and everythings resolved in that sense.
Once again, thank you all for helping me with my problem. Now I shall go forth, blasting idle storm troopers into bite-sized bits.
