what would one wear to a cocktail party?

ok, so i have to go to this cocktail party next week. it's at a professor's home (from the law school i will be starting in the fall). i dont know anybody there, and i'm not sure how fancy it will be. i'm nervous enough about conversation and making a good impression and all without the whole clothing issue. and, to complicate things a little further, i have an ankle injury that will likely dictate that i wear sneakers or, at the very best, flats.

so... anyone have any suggestions as to what i might wear to this thing? thanks..

something simple, not overly ostentatious. sneakers are normally a no-no. flats are ok. black is a always a safe color.

I would go with a simple black slip dress and a nice pair of open toed black heels. Simple, yet sexy.
