Ok, is it just me or is anyone else very suspicious of On Star? On the surface it seems like a good thing to have in your car (directions, breakdown, etc.) but I think it's one more way the government can know where we are all the time.

My parents are lawyers and have told me that the police are using this in some cases as a way to put someone at a scene of a crime/accident. I'm not saying that is a bad thing that people are being brought to justice, but this opens the door for "virtually" placing us somewhere. What if you weren't driving that day? How do you prove that? And how else can they use this system to invade our privacy?

Maybe I am just paranoid, but I just want as little government involvement in my life as possible. Does anyone else see this as a possible threat?

And ChristheCop-have you heard of this being used at all by police?

I've heard fucked up stories where people have borrowed a friend's car (with permission) and the On Star kicked in (either by itself or because they hit the button) and the person working for On Star asks them for the password for whatever reason, and the On Star person would shut down the car and/or call the cops on the driver.

Fun shit, eh?

i doubt that is happening

It sounds like an urban legend. Just like the one, the gov't is using onstar to track how fast you're going and give you a ticket if the satalite(or are they using unmarked black helicopters) see you're going over 55mph.

OnStar is a private company, not a branch of the CIA. If Big Brother wanted to track you, it wouldn't be in such an obvious way.

Furie- The case my mom was telling me about she heard on the news. It was a hit and run accident. On Star gets notified when the car airbag goes off. And in this case they put his car at the location of the hit and run at the time his air bag went off. I don't know how often it has happened, but if they can now subpeona emails (that you think are deleted) and trace your cell phone location, I don't find it hard to believe they would do this.
