View Full Version : How Much Do YOU Know About Government?

Al Dukes' appalling lack of interest and knowledge in the United States Government brought to light just how clueless most citizens are.

It's a crying shame that many Americans don't bother to learn just how amazingly intelligent and far seeing our founding fathers were, and I salute Heckler for his on-air admonishing of Mr. Dukes.

When I think of how many men and women died protecting this country, it truly sickens me that so many people have such an apathetic attitude. In fact, to most people, Memorial Day is nothing more than a 3 day weekend with an excuse to barbecue and get drunk. Pathetic.

Thank you for letting me vent.

True , but I feel the armed forces has little to do with government/politics in this country. A President w/ an eye towards cigar chomping interns. A President who can't remember/recall certain arms deals. A President who records everything and has a troubleshooting "Plumbers" group at the ready. I can't blame people from being distanced/disinterested in their government and their leaders. I think the finger needs to be pointed towards Washington. I think our elected officials need to start acting like statesmen and leaders. In other words I think the government has to earn our respect back. And this is coming from a Political Science major who the system has perpetually let down.

You think people who died to preserve the very ideals this country was founded on has little to do with government?

You're right, GVAC. I can't believe that Al doesn't even care about the fact that he knows next to nothing about gov't. Our paychecks, our rights, and the wars we get invovled in (i.e. Sept. 11th) are determined in large part by government dealings and those who occupy positions of power.
You would think that maybe since Al sees Bob Grant at the Rio Diner he would he somehow take an interest in basic government knowledge, but I guess a masters in communications clouds out other brain activity. I don't likeNoam Chomsky's politics but I think he has a good point in that our quality of life and our liberties are in danger when we are apathetic.

See ya!

Its amazing to watch american born people fail to know even the most basic questions about american government (Yes, thats for you Al Fag Dukes, with your masters and all...)

In my esperience people that were NOT born in this country have a MUCH better knowledge of both american and world politics and history than american good ol' boys...

Its a fucking shame.

I just heard it. All hail Heckler!

Having worked in politics, I find the most frustrating problem in Washington to be the Al Dukes of America, who can name the last 10 World Series winners, (or in Al's case, all of the Supremes), but can't name thier own representative in Congress. The point of democracy is that power is there for the people, but if they don't use it, someone else will take it.

Then again, I don't really want Al involved in my government. Nevermind.

Heckler is my hero.

Thanks.
I have always been active in politics, I also collect political memoribilia.
My first job in politics was working for Nixon in 1972, working at the Democratic Convention in 1976 for Carter at The Americana Hotel and countless local campaigns. Why the switch from Nixon to Carter? I was confused at the time, a time when I was idealistic and believed in something. Now I'm just a cynic who rejects both major parties and votes for the lesser of two evils.

Al's lack of knowledge about our government is only surpassed by his lack of heterosexuality. I was embarrassed for Ron & Fez. The worst part is that Al has a master's degree.
I can name all the federal representatives from New York and all the elected officials in my district. As a Marine, knowing who may order you to fight/die was important. I never stopped, I like to know where my money is going, and how it's being used.

I am very interested in my government. I even work at the polls every election for the past two years. The next time I have to work is june 4th for the primaries in nj. I am planning on being a senetor or a congressman when i'm in my later life. People should be involved in their government, it is what makes it great to be an american, the fact that we are able to be involed unlike other countries.

It really is disheartening that so many people (both educated and uneducated alike) know so little about government and its basic principles or even about US History as a whole. When I read the article a few weeks ago about the results of American History tests given to school students, I nearly vomited on myself. It almost seems that people in general have no interest in a particular historic occurance unless it is made into a major motion picture (i.e. Saving Private Ryan)

I think that one of the biggest problems is that so many try to interpret the Constitution, a document that for the most part, could not have been written any more straight forward where interpretation wasn't needed. Which leads directly to frivilous lawsuits, most forms of political corruption, stand offs against local militia (which are legal by the way as per the Constitution) and protests and rally's (again legal as per the Constitution).

gvac and rooster, i think you are misunderstanding what jamesdiggy is trying to say. to me it read like: "no matter who fights and dies for this country, the people pulling the strings sit in washington, and they have let us down consistantly." he was not putting down the armed forces, merely saying that they are a tool; only as useful as he who wields it.

Maybe I phrased it badly, but I wasn't trying to put down the armed forces. DarkHippie got what I was tryin to convey. That our leaders in Washington seem more loyal to PAC's, Corporations like A.D.M, and Special Interest groups. And that the spirit and integrity of the men who fought the Revolutionary War is sadly lacking in our leaders today.

When's the last time anyone's seen a LOCAL militia? Sure, it's legal, but outdated. (by the way--the police are not a militia.)

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.

I have been saying this forever. Nothing pisses me off more than people who rail against "Washington", "politicians", "the government", or "the system" and 1) cannot name their elected officials or 2) don't vote. If you don't pay attention or vote you forfeit the right to complain.

The stupid "Jaywalking" bit that Leno does typifies this. Some idiot can identify a picture of Eminen but not the Vice President of the United States. Boy, that's hysterical.

If the 2000 election proved anything it's that every vote DOES count. I don't care about people's political affiliations -- just vote and pay attention to what's going on!

I'm sorry for ranting -- maybe it's because I was a Political Science major.

Chris, just because you don't see them, it does not mean that they do not exist. For the most part they are scattered around the mid west. In fact I believe it was only a few years ago that there was a stand off with one somewhere in the mid west (if anyone knows the particulars, please feel free to share).
