View Full Version : talking to kids about sex

did your parents talk to you about sex when you were growing up? if so, at what age, and what kind of talk was it? and, most importantly, how did you think this affected your sexual development?
my parents never talked to me about sex at all. everything i learned was through friends and tv/movies and whatever other ways kids find out about these things. i'd imagine that this has informed the way i've developed sexually in multiple ways. i am a very sexual person, and i think that might be at least in part due to the fact that it was a sort of taboo subject in my home. it's also affected me in that i've never felt comfortable going to my parents with anything sexual, or to my sister for that matter. i think that if i had gotten some sort of talk when i was younger (as embarrassing and awkward as that must be) and was assured that i could come to them, maybe i would have asked questions or advice when i needed to. it's not that i think they would have a problem discussing sex, but once you set a precedent like that it is nearly impossible to break it.
so please, i am really interested in this and i'd like to read anything you guys are willing to share.

My mom sat me down pretty young i guess (4th grade) when she got pregnant with my lil sis (LuLu :)). Anyway, she had a book that had pictures and stuff. I don't remember feeling that embarassed and I already knew about sex, just not the actual details.
In terms of if it affected my view of sex, I can't really say. I am a sexual person too and I think sex is a good thing, but it's important to me. I am still a virgin and I decided that I was going to wait pretty young. That had nothing to do with the talk though. I think the key is just not to leave your child ignorant about it. They can wiegh the pros and cons and decide for themselves, but they should know something.

my parents never game me the talk either... i sorta wish they had because i think it affected me (as horrible as having "the talk" would be). There was one time my dad thought I was pregnant and he breifly said you can talk to me if you want to get birth control.... I was HORRIFIED.
I learned everything about sex through movies, school, and Cosmo :) I think sex ed in the schools is good, because otherwise how the hell would I have gotten decent facts about sex

I was able to read at a very young age and I used to read those pamphlets in the doctor's office. But the first major source of sex-ed was the classic 1970s After School special "My Mom Is Having A Baby". Thankfully, I never had to have "the talk" with my parents.

Sex ed in school gave me more info than I could ever get from my dad anyway.
He did talk to me when I was about 10 or 11...But that was more of a "what don't you know?" session.
Mrs.Mellen in 7th grade health class told us everything we needed to know...I just remember this one kid asking all of his questions about masturbation. And we all giggled...But it was precious info!

I was in the second grade when my parents told me about sex only because others in school were talking about it & i was caught watching on of the movies my friends gave me. They were quite blunt and graphic, very disturning for me at such a young age.

my parents idea of giving me the talk was telling dirty jokes where i might overhear them.
even these days, my dad is living in a time warp and refuses to comprehend that people have sex outside of marriage

My doctor gave me a book explaining it all. My parents never said anything. It stunted my sexual maturity.

My dad gave the old birds and the bees story, it was the most unconfortible conversation he was in, but kids are going to find out no matter what either form their parents or bad info from friend or from sex ed.

My parents never had the chat with me I lerned everything From TV,sex-ed, and a few ladies in Highschool.....
Allthough I don't think it would have been akward for my parent to chat with me about it.....I know when I have children I will give them the talk and I would want them to come to me with any question they may have....

I got the talk in when i was 8 from two of my freinds who were in 5/6th grade. but they told me it with pussies, dicks, cum, and all that other good stuff. i was basically one of the like three kids who told this to all my friends when we were still in 2nd grade.
this never had any effect on me except i masterbate constantly, but theres no connection there

I learned everything I need to know about sex from Howard Stern and the internet. F parents.
<IMG SRC="http://wwfallon.homestead.com/files/RFnet.jpg">
My parents gave me a couple of books with naked cartoon drawings of a mom and dad. If I had a question, they'd tell me the answer in graphic detail - "Well, the man inserts his penis into the woman's vagina.." Plus, when we were a bit older, Dad would take us on a "walk" where he'd tell us about contraception and such. "When a girl says she's taking the pill she might be talking about vitamins, so make sure you always use a condom."
