LOS ANGELES/TOKYO - Sony Corp. said on Monday it cut the price of its PlayStation 2 game console by one-third and halved the price of its older PlayStation One, a preemptive move expected to touch off a round of discounting by rivals.

Effective immediately, the PS2 will cost $199 in the United States, down from $299, while the first-generation PSX will sell for $49, down from $99. Prices for accessories and extra controllers will also be reduced, Sony said in a statement.

Sony will also consider future price cuts on its game software, an executive said.

The cut comes as analysts, game publishers and retailers anticipate that Microsoft Corp will cut the price of its competing Xbox console, also currently $299, at the industry's Electronic Entertainment Expo, the major video game trade show, next week.

''It's not surprising that they want to get in front of Microsoft,'' said UBS Warburg analyst Mike Wallace. ''Why else would Sony do it now?''

Sony said it was making the price cut now, as opposed to September as had been expected by some industry watchers, because it wanted to build momentum at the new discounted price in advance of the year-end holiday season, the make-or-break period for video game sales.

''This way we can have some time so we can plan out the rest of the year with our retailers,'' Kaz Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, told Reuters.

At $199, the PS2 will be priced the same as Nintendo Co Ltd's GameCube, which does not have the DVD playback capabilities of the PS2 or as extensive a game library. The GameCube, like the Xbox, came out last November.

In early April, a senior Nintendo executive told Reuters the company would reconsider its GameCube pricing if Sony announced a price cut, especially to the $199 level.

according to psm magazine PS2 is beating the shit out of X-Box and GameCube.
I paid freekin $300 for PS2 I really hope that games will go down from $50. I am already seeing price drops but that is mostly in crappy or older games.
Hey if PS one goes to $50 and the portable screen goes down alot I'll get that even though I already have the original psx. It would be so cool to play psx games in the car!

thanks goodness the prices are coming down. we have to replace our ps2 it broke nad i really didn't want to pay $299 for another one.

Forget about X-box dropping their price next week. They dropped it today!!! I am getting that X-box!! Now will game cube drop theirs? Or are they having a good laugh? I would love to have been there to see the reaction of last person to buy the PS2 for $300 when they heard the news of the price drop.
That look would have been priceless.

I don't see that happening because Microsoft would want the X-Box to be on li'l Jimmy's chistmas list. Parents tend to think "They're all the same anyway" so they'd buy the cheaper ps2 which to be perfectly honest what kid is gonna turn up his nose with the exception of an overpriviledged brat right?

I'll pick up a used ps2 for $100 now...

And X-Box is not selling well. They needed to drop the price in order to try and entice new users. They were going to announce the drop next week during E3, but were forced to play their hand early b/c of Sony's surprise announcement.

Gamecube is also rumored to be dropping, but nothing concrete yet.
