I have a 5 year old male cat, who absolutely love me. He weights between 15-20 lbs. Lately he has been crawling onto my pillow above my head. First he just nuzzles his head against mine, then he'll start to bite it. The first time he did that it scared the shit out of me. The wierdest thing is that i've seen him do that to my other cat. Any ideas as to why he's biting my head?? I've had him for a year and this is a new thing that he is doing.

My ex-girlfriend's cat used to do the same thing. The cat would rest on the back of the couch above my head and start nuzzling it's head against mine. Then I thought it was biting me but it really wasn't "biting" per se.

both of my cats like to sleep on my pillows by my head. the female will chew on my hair occasionally. she doesn't bite my head...she prefers to bite the heads off of mice instead.

Sorry Zath...I don't know why your cat is doing that. My ex's cat would bite my hand sometimes but never my head.

My cat Otis looks for teats in my hair. He nuzzles against my head and starts sucking on my hair and kneading my scalp. He's a little freak. Scares me to think what he would be capable of if he had thumbs.

Out of my 3 cats, Fred loves me the most. He does the same thing in the bed. He also seems like hes burrowing between my head and the pillow. cats are wierd :)

i would think that he's trying to burrow between the pillow and my head except that his teeth keep scraping my head. i keep finding bite marks on my head. not enough to draw blood, but he scrapesn his teeth through my hair and scalp.

Maybe that new catnip shampoo wasn't such a good idea?

i don't think it's the catnip shampoo. but you may be on something there, my shampoo does smell of vanilla, maybe he's hungry

Cats tend to have a mother/kitten type of relationship with their owners. Your cat probably finds it very comforting to nuzzle into you, just as she used to do with her mother when it was a kitten. It makes her feel warm & safe.

michael
does that also go with male cats? i can understand why a female would do it, but a male? then again he doesn't have anything to remind him that he was a male.

Zath- Let's try this scientifically... Is there a specific time that he does it (evening, morning, etc.)? Does he come over to you and start or is it after you come to where he was sitting/laying down first it could be he's indicating that "he was there first". Maybe try a different shampoo (maybe it is the vanilla) to see if that makes a difference.

Z,
I don't think there's a difference between male/female cat's on this. My male cat does it too. Nuzzling & bites are natural social cat behavior. Think of it as "regressing" back to his kitten days.
If he's screwing up your sleep, a mild tap on the nose might stop it. Or a half-dozen Xanax in the food bowl always works.

wilee,
he usually does it early in the
morning, especially if its a
morning that i don't have to get
up early.

it could be your cat is hungry.. my cat knocks stuff off of endtables, pounds on doors, and just about makes as much noise ass possible to wake everyone up untill she is feed... very fucking annoying.. she is doing this earlier than ever, she now starts this shit at 4am... i could kill her sometimes...
