Not the best that you heard of or read about..who was the best you ever saw? It's a tough question, but I would have to say Roberto Clemente.

Technically, I saw Mark "The Bird"
Fydrich pitch at Yankee stadium,
but I was a toddler.
As far as great ballpark memories
go, I'd have to say that Darryl
Strawberry was the greatest
ballplayer that I can remember.
He hit the farthest couple of
homeruns that I have ever
witnessed, and although he was
kind of a shitty fielder on paper,
he had a grace that to my mind
goes unparalleled in right.

From the only band that
matters...
I saw a few Hall of Famers play (at Fenway and Yankee Stadium) when I was a little kid: Carl Yaztremski, Carlton Fisk, Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter.
I saw Wade Boggs hit a game winning home run his rookie year in Boston. Before the game I got him to autograph a ball for me but I gave the thing away -- an autographed ball by a future Hall of Famer. Smart.

I saw quite a few, but my fondest memory was being at Shea in 1973 or 1974 for Willie Mays Day.

I've seen alot of great players as well. George Brett, Nolan Ryan, Mike Schmidt, Reggie Jackson and Joe Morgan, among others.

I got to see the greatest of them all, though, when I went to my first baseball game ever. It was July 13, 1973. The Mets played the Astros and I got to see Willie Mays.

It's amazing that Yaz won the triple crown and it has not been done since.
As for other great players, the best pitcher I ever saw was Seaver, and the best overall hitter was Tony Oliva. If only he was healthy, he would have ruled the league.

Joe Morgan during the Big Red Machine days. He was a really smart, heads-up player; had all the skills. And a fierce competitor.
I loved watching Andre Dawson patrol center field during the 80s. He always made the key throw from the outfield. He could do it all: power, speed, defence, & batting average.
The most most exciting player today is Vladimir Guerrero - the complete package (and the owner of the strongest outfield arm in the game).

I'm pretty much an American League guy. I've been to Shea only about 5 times. With that said, Here's some of the greatest that I've seen in person.
In no order:
George Brett
Reggie Jackson
Dave Winfield
Nolan Ryan
Barry Bonds
Mike Piazza
Ken Griffey jr.

I loved the power hitters, guys like McCovey, Killebrew, Howard, and of course, my hero, The Mick.
I also remember Boog Powell of the Orioles hitting the monuments in the old Yankee Stadium on a line drive..the hardest hit ball I have ever seen.
PS: Richie(Dick)Allen was also a very dominant hitter.

I was such a Cincinnati Reds fanatic as a kid (and still am) that maybe I'm a bit biased, but Pete Rose and Johnny Bench thrilled me like no other players since.
