in general, i've found that when people leave their bands and come out with solo albums, they tend to suck ass. and even when they're decent, i usually think "they really should have stayed with their band". so i'm wondering if there are times when the person made the right decision in having left their band to pursue a solo career... the only one that's coming to my mind right now (although i'm sure there are a million) is elliott smith leaving heatmiser.

wings was never as good as the beatles.

clapton's music outside of his bands was pretty good. so was george harrison, but in general, i think bands have a certain magic that once they break up gets lost.

Busta Rhymes has done pretty good for himself since he left Leaders of the New School.

Paul Westerberg may as well have been calling the last few Replacements albums solo work. And Ben Folds seems to be doing ok. Frank Black aka Black Francis never had the feel The Pixies did when he went solo. Same goes for Kelly Deal. The Kelly Deal 6000 was just awful.

Even though I hate SOULFLY, Max Cavalera was more Commerically sucessful then when was in Sepultura.
The Same statement goes for Rob Zombie after White Zombie....

What do you expect from a heroin addict who could only play 3 chords?

Sting, Stevie Nicks, Bob Mould, Natalie Merchant, Peter Murphy (but I'm biased) are a few who come to mind.

Thank god busta left the new school, he'd never be with martha stewart at the MTV Vma's.

I think solo carrers for members of the Lox and Wu Tang Clan worked out even though they didnt really break up.

After failing at solo careers, these idiots should be forced to join one giant supergroup along with: Ric Ocasek, John Oates, Richie Sambora, Art Garfunkel, and Tommy Lee. Ahhh... and the bands manager could be David Caruso.

The only ones I'd agree with so far are Peter Gabriel and Michael Jackson. Sting?! He was so much better as part of the Police. Of course, they broke up, which is a different matter. Actually, a lot of the ones mentioned are people whose groups ended, not who decided to leave to do a solo career.

morrissey

although i like some of morrissey's solo stuff, i would never say that it was even close to the smiths...
