Okay ... this is a silly question but I have to ask it! I was telling a board member the other night { forgot who it was } that I live "ON" Long Island. They we got into a whole discussion about saying "IN LONG ISLAND" or "ON LONG ISLAND" ...
I always say "ON" Long Island ... but yet I say "IN" Manhattan ... and Manhattan is an island too!
So what do you say ... "ON" or "IN"?
See, I told you this was a silly question! ;-)

I'm not ashamed, I'm a proud Jersey girl (that's why I live in Texas, right?)
Anyway, I would say ON long island, you probably just say in Manhattan because from where you live you have to go IN to the city....

When I was looking to get a ride back from school, I made the mistake of saying I was looking for a ride to "the city". I was driven to Rochester.

Yes, technically and geographically they are located on Long Island. But the people of those areas like to pretend they aren't actually physically on the island. I always find it funny when I hear people from Brooklyn swear up and down that they are not on Long Island.

I always say ON Long Island. Strange, but people who live on the Western end of the island, particularly in Brooklyn are totally unaware that they are in fact On the island and they get extremely defensive of their belief that they are "in the city". Tha same thing with "The Bronx" too... when spoken, everyone says "the Bronx" but when addressing a letter, we write;
John Simmons
125 Vernon St.
Bronx, N.Y. 10234
So can someone say "Sally? She moved to Bronx." ?

geographically speaking, yes. but politically speakinf, fuk no. my area code is 718 not 516. i have the south and north conduit not sunrise highway. i have merrick blvd, not merrick rd. and i have 8.24% sales tax while LI has 8.5% sales tax. and we have a kick ass public transportation system, while LI's sux balls.

brooklyn and queens are located on the land of long island. but they are techinically not long island, they are new york city, pay tax to the city, and follow the laws of the city. and dont use location as tchnicality. i live in jersey, technically, im on the same strip of land as california.

See what I mean? Its like someone from the Bowery not wanting to admit they are on Manhattan. I understand it, but I just fail to see how living so close to your neighbor to the point where you cant walk around your apartment in the nude for fear that they'll see you through the windows. Or being able to easily step from house to house via the rooftops and cover hundereds of houses in this manner is anything to brag about, let alone defend to the point of being compelled to express your hatred for the land mass that you LIVE ON to the point of physical violence.

see i live extremely close to the island. about 4 or 5 more blocks east and it is long island. i went to grade school on long island, my 2 best friends live on long island. but i went to highschool in queens. i took the city bus home everyday, and i spent time purchasing stolen goods on jamaica avenue almost everyday. ive experienced both worlds, and i honestly love nyc. i mean the ability to get only get a summons for having 20 sack in new york, compared to a trip to county on LI, that alone is the reason i love nyc.

if it was called "Manhattan Island" instead of "Manhattan", then you could say that you lived on it. The fact that "island" is in the name "long island" would make it understandable to say you lived on it instead of in it. You can't live on a city. Unless its a floating city. which would be cool and you could wave to everyone on the ground and say "haha you people are on the ground. you guys are so last year with your 'dirt' and 'rocks' and 'fixed landmasses'. you guys suck!"
but getting back to the topic at hand...
cities are places with buildings. If you're somewhere other than standing in between the buildings, you're not in the city. you can't say that you're "on" it cuz you can't. there's no way. and the same thing goes for being "in' an island.

call it whatever the fuck you want, brooklyn and queens are boroughs of the city, and have no relationship to long island anymore than staten island does. this is ridiculous. Boston is on the coast, and you dont need to cross a bridge to get to cap cod, but boston's not cape cod, ITS BOSTON. i mean damn all of north and south amercia is one island. breaks in land dont make boundaries, town lines do. otherwise if i walk over the state like from mahwah to suffern, its the same land, but have nothing in common. deal with it people

Well, actually you're missing the point. If you're going to say that Mahwah and Suffern have nothing in common, you're forgetting that they're both in "New Jersey". If you're claiming that New York and California are on the same "island", you're forgetting that they're both considered to be in "America".
Granted, it is semantics, but in fact Brooklyn and Queens DO have a relationship with Long Island that Staten Island, Manhattan, the Bronx, and the rest of the world do not - they're on the same land mass - the one that is named "Long Island".
People refer to Nassau and Suffolk counties as "Long Island" as a convenience to distinguish them from Brooklyn and Queens, but it really is just the name of the island - not of a county or borough. Brooklyn and Queens boroughs ARE on the island called Long Island. They aren't in Suffolk County, people who live there pay NYC taxes, and they are boroughs of NYC, but they are on Long Island, just as the borough of Manhattan is on Manhattan Island, the borough of Staten Island is on Staten Island, and the borough of the Bronx is I suppose technically actually on the continent of North America.
You're getting very vehement about this; perhaps you are the one that needs to just "deal with it".

the deal with it is in general, but since you wanna think your better than everyone else, i finally get to shut you up on at least one thing. Suffern is in rockland county, NY and mahwah is in bergen county, NJ. 2 different states, so look at a map before you stab at what i say
