From Yahoo! News:
LONDON (Reuters) - Cowabunga, dude! Could the end be near for cult television cartoon family
"The Simpsons ?"
"I think we are closer to winding it up," the television show's creator, Matt
Groening, told the Financial Times in an interview published Tuesday.
"Although what happens generally if we win the Emmy for best animation
show is that that gives us another couple of years to run it into the ground," he
said.
Groening has earned millions for media baron Rupert Murdoch's Fox channel
since the series featuring Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and baby Maggie first
entered the lives of television viewers in 1989.
Its appeal has spread far beyond its American setting and its dysfunctional characters have become
globally recognized symbols of mid-life crisis and childhood rebellion.
TV Guide recently placed the animated show eighth on its list of the 50 greatest television shows of all
time.
Its power to attract audiences is such that in February Britain's Channel 4 was said to have paid up to
$1 million an episode to show the series, outbidding the BBC, which had been broadcasting it for the
past six years.
And it retains its ability to cause upset. When a recent episode depicted Rio de Janeiro as teeming with
rats, monkeys and street crime, Brazilian tourist officials were outraged and the
show's executive producer was forced to apologize.
But Groening admitted to weariness with the formula of the show, now in its 13th series.
"It becomes increasingly difficult as the years go by to keep on not only surprising the audience, but
surprising ourselves," he said.
However, he said he doubted his creative angst would overly concern the television accountants.
"I think Fox will wring every last penny out of the show before they call it a day."

It makes me think
December
It would suck if the show ended but it HAS been 13 years.
13 years? How depressing -- I remember being in college and watching this brand new show called The Simpsons!

you know the song the day the music died?
when the simpsons go off the air it will be the day television died. i'm about to cry just thinking about life without the simpsons.

I love it when they call me big poppa.
I only smoke blunts if they roll proppa.
What would life be like with out the simpsons? I know it will be in syndication for ever & ever, but seriously, I cant live without my daily dose of it.
I remember that I was in second grade when the show came out and my mom told me I wasn't allowed to watch it becuase it was "inapropriate". Can you imagine when some of us are older & have kids & grandkids that looking back at the simpsons will be passe? Like when I say "Tastes like burning" they'll say "Oh grandma, will you stop quoting that silly old show". Those hooligan bastards! I'll beat them with my cane.
I just realized I was thinking aloud again, I need to stop doing that, its dangerous.

The Simpsons have been sub par the past couple of seasons. dont get me wrong, they are still great and better than anything else on TV. Im a diehard fan and not a day goes by where I dont quote it. I dont want the show to end, but it seems the writers are running out of new material. It might be for the best? oh, and when does season 2 come out on dvd?

I never wanna say my best days are behind me!

Will the movie be cgi or tradtional animation? I prefer animation. Cgi would make the Simpsons move too smooth and would look too weird.

If it goes away, the least they can do is give us more merchandise. I know I'd buy a Canyonero.

Good. It's about time. I'm a big fan of The Simpsons. I consider it one of the best shows ever made, if not THE best show. But for God's sake end it already. It should have ended years ago.
The writers have given up, Groening essentially has said that. He is saying that they have run out of ideas, they are tired, they just can't think of what else to do with the characters any more. They no longer enjoy making the show so why must we, the viewer, want them to do so?
Why must we force them to churn out more substandard crap because we don't want to live with the fact that the show has decreased in quality. Sure there are some good episodes and even mediocre episodes have a couple of chuckles but not many and there are even those that are really painful like the cowboy episode recently reaired.
Why must we expect shows to last forever? I'd prefer a show to last with us wanting more than to us watching a half hour just for their what seems like weekly "we're sorry this episode sucked/made no sense" explanation. Maybe this was cute or funny the first couple of times but when they feel the need to point out their inadequacies, it's starting to get quite pathetic.
So yes, I will continue watching The Simpsons throughout its run. And yes, I will be there opening day if a cinematic feature is in order for the groundbreaking cartoon that for years was the best that television had to offer (of course I think they should take a couple years off to refresh themselves and then start anew). But will I praise the current seasons? Will I say that the show's quality hasn't faltered or fallen? No. While I still will praise the show as a whole as something that showed how great the medium of television can be, I can't say that the television depature of The Simpsons is something unexpected or unwanted. Sure it's the end of a major era but I would have rather it ended on top instead of having to grasp onto the smallest hope that "this week's episode wasn't so bad! The show's old glory is coming back again!"

They should've have stopped around season eight. I haven't tuned in to watch the Sunday night show premieres in almost 6 years cause the new ones are so painfully bad, and now even the reruns are a gamble since so many new, mediocre episoides have crept in. All those who say it never declined are crazy. Kill it!

'The Simpsons' Not Close to Ending, Creator Says!!!!!
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Reports of the imminent demise of Homer Simpson and his beloved but dysfunctional cartoon family are grossly exaggerated, their creator said on Wednesday.
In fact, says cartoonist Matt Groening, television viewers are going to have "The Simpsons" to kick around for years and years to come despite what the headlines of the British press might be saying. "D'oh!" as Homer might exclaim.
Groening strongly denied a British newspaper report that he was planning to wind up the series shortly because it was getting harder and harder to find funny things to say.
Cowabunga, dude! That's not the case at all.
"I was misquoted and misunderstood. I don't want anyone to think I am predicting the demise of the Simpsons. They will live on with new adventures for years to come. As long as there are things to make fun of we will be around," the Los Angeles-based Groening said in a telephone interview with Reuters.
The London Financial Times kicked off an international fuss when it quoted Groening on Tuesday as saying: "I think we are closer to winding it up ... Although what happens generally if we win the Emmy for best animation show is that that gives us another couple of years to run it into the ground.
"It becomes increasingly difficult as the years go by to keep on not only surprising the audience, but surprising ourselves."
Groening said these were comments that he often made before but were taken out of context and misunderstood.
"I am always asked how much longer can this go on. I just said that given the fact the we just finished our 300th episode, I would guess we are closer to the end of our life than the beginning. At the end of our 100th episode (one of our writers) said we were halfway home. Now we think the show will last, our ratings are better than ever."
Groening has earned millions for media baron Rupert Murdoch's Fox network since the series featuring Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and baby Maggie first entered the lives of television viewers in 1989. In fact, he predicted that the Simpsons "will continue to make Rupert Murdoch even richer."
He added that he was not bored or unhappy with the program. "After 300 episodes it is more difficult to remain true to the characters. We are trying to top ourselves after all those great shows and the shows are as good now as they have ever been."
"TV Guide" magazine recently placed the animated show eighth on its list of the 50 greatest television shows of all time.
And it retains its ability to cause upset. When a recent episode depicted Rio de Janeiro as teeming with rats, monkeys and street crime, Brazilian tourist officials were outraged and the show's executive producer was forced to apologize.
The Fox network is part of the Fox Entertainment Group Inc., which controlled by News Corp. Ltd.

Simpson's last words: YOUR MOM's BOX?!?
I heard about this on Headline News around my parts. They interviewed someone from the production staff on the show and said that they are still trying to put out 3 movies concerning the Simpsons but they want it to be unique... none have been made as of yet.
Spongebob... Simpsons... what next... Blue's Clues.... NOoooooooo! lol.
