In September of 1993 a small show started on FOX Friday night, a show that conceivably should have failed before the midseason. It started with nothing more than small following but became THE dork show of the mid 90s. The show was about a man's quest, one assigned to keep him harnessed to the world of science, a government of nameless men who had no loyalty and was an intelligently done show with real main characters, fascinating supporting characters and intriguing plotlines for standalone and the uniting mythology episode. That show was "The X-Files" and it ended up as a bigger hit than FOX ever expected with great significant episodes were balanced with fine stand alone ones, blending comedy, drama and the supernatural. And it really was one hell of a good show.
It's easy to harp on the bad moments, the awful seasons they churned out over the past five or so years. The show obviously should have been cancelled years ago when it became first apparent that Chris Carter was a nothing but an adequate storyteller who couldn't see for the long term. He kept adding on plotlines without closing others (clones shapeshifters, super soldiers, black oil, etc.) and didn't seem to care. By the end it came to the point where they just thought saying "oh that wasn't real what you saw" as a credible excuse. Hell the sister plotline was resolved with her in an intergalactic game of ring around the rosey- AWFUL!
Yet for a few years (maybe three or four) it was a good show, a cultural phenomenon. It still had a chance of developing successfully and intelligently. The characters and the writers weren't exhausted. And at least the final season proved to us that Robert Patrick is actually a pretty good actor who would definitely get noticed if his cop character were any other cop show.
Starting tonight and continuing for the next four weeks the final four episodes of X-Files will be on FOX Sunday nights in what is called "The X-Files: Endgame" allegedly planning to tie up the loose ends that have been created over the years.
Now, X-Files is thankfully being put to rest years after it was due but for a couple of years at least, it was a great sci-fi drama that was better than most any other long running show on TV today.
...and there's always the second feature film coming out in 2003/4

The last season sucked my left testical. I might watch it tonight, but I seriously doubt it.
It should have ended with Duchovny.

I used to love this show, but it just became so bad and tedious that I burned on it really quickly.
I think this is one of the situations where the legacy has become too tarnished. I have such a bad taste in my mouth from the last few awful seasons that I find it hard to watch some of the earlier episodes now.

I really liked the show at one point, but you're right Ikea, and hit it right on the head...no long term vision, and way too many storylines that were never wrapped up. I can't count the number of times they said, here's the episode that explains everything! I still dont' know what the fuck is going on, and I give up. But those first couple years it was on were very good.

I watched the show religiously for the first three seasons with my girlfriend. It became pizza and beer night when the X-Files were on. After that much time (3 seasons,) if I heard the word X-Files I would immediately crave pizza and beer. Those episodes were gems. But this is coming from the same person who was into "VR5" --- remember that show?
I watched most of the fourth and fifth seasons. Seasons six and seven were an on and off again affair. Forget season eight, I didn't see one episode.
Now that the season is coming to a close I have decided to pick up my old pizza and beer habit. I watched the last one where the lone gunman died (which I hated the fact they killed them off) and had me 2 buds and 4 slices of extra cheese. This one, where the baby was sent off to another family, 1 bud and 2 slices of meatball.
I hear that next weeks show has something to do with the Brady Bunch. I'll be pissed if the show sucks, but I'm sure the beer and pizza will be outstanding.
btw if anyone saw that Lone Gunman episode, wasn't it interesting that at the end in the cemetary there were 3 people standing next to Scully. Hmm, new Lone Gunman perhaps?

I watched teh show for the first 3 seasons, and I thought it rocked. When the "mythology" overtook the supernatural, the show got boring to me. My fave chars were the Lone Gunmen, but their death was so anti-climactic.
I also watched last nite, 'cause Alias wasn't on and it was just so dull.

Yeah...X-Files is so dead to me. Alias is my new Sunday night 9PM show. I love it, but the plot is getting so complicated, if you miss an episode you're screwed.

My screen name is fucking MulderManX. How pathetic is that? Don't answer.
I'll still stand by the fact that the first three seasons, and hell, some of the fourth, were some great fucking television. But over $100 for a boxed set? Fuck you very much.
Chris Carter should be lynched just for making me come back to watching the show only to discover that apparently Samantha Mulder was never part of any conspiracy, but in fact was just playing ring around the rosie in the elysium fields. GREAT. FINE. DANDY.
David Duchovny could be lauded for bailing from a sinking ship, but what else is he going to do?
Oh, and T-1000 was pretty damn decent as far as replacement actors go.

It's hard for me to come up with a favorite episode, but the one that immediately comes to mind is "serulean blue" (not sure of the spelling). Also a good, although commercial one, was the Christmas episode, with Ed Asner and Lily Tomlin. Yes..it shouldve ended long ago, but the only thing that's ever kept me away from fox on sunday is the Sopranos. Oh, and Pooter, I have 2 accounts with the name mulder involved, so I guess I'm twice the loser you are. Nyah.

Best episode ever was "Beyond the Sea", followed closely by pretty much any Morgan and Wong penned ep. God I'm a loser.

I am fan of the show, but it was about time the show ended. Fox gave the x-files more respect than married with childen

The final episode airs tomorrow at 8, it's two hours that should rap things up...at least until the next movie. The lead up episodes haven't been great. The death of the Gunmen were disappointing considing they were great characters whose deaths should have been more related to the continuing mythology. Further episodes have worked to ending plotends but nothing to the excitement of earlier episodes. Having Elwes as Luke's killer was lame and the Brady episode also didn't contribute much or have the goodness of prior stand alones.
Tomorrow it's a 2 hour finale and it's against some MAJOR competition (another NBC outtakes special and the Cosbey reunion; Survivor finale) but I am awaiting this, not so anxiously but I am waiting and who knows whether or not it is going to work out but here's hoping.
In addition, new Simpsons episode at 7:30; the season finale of The Simpsons is on Wednesday.
