a friend and i were discussing catcher in the rye today, and this is what he had to say
holden caulfield was a whiner and all he did the whole damn book was complain about people. i didn't like him.
he's the first person i've ever known who has felt this way. i think to most people i know (including myself) see him as a kind of hero or something. i was just wondering what other people thought...

i don't know about hero, but he's one of the greatest characters ever.
he's the insecurity everyone has inside, and the feeling that nothing is good.

From what i remember reading...he seemed like a character ahead of his time......having characteristics and feelings of todays teens
Who do you think would play him in a movie?

Catcher in the Rye was a piece of crap, and Holden (obviously Salinger in disguise) was a complete loser.
People continue to think this book is a classic b/c way back when, one alienated but intelligent guy saw himself as Holden, and said the book was great. Everyone else was too confused with the point (or lack thereof) of the story, and agreed for fear of being seen as stupid.
No wonder Salinger went into hiding.

I really don't think that mass confusion is the reason why Catcher in the Rye is a classic.

It wasn't a piece of crap at all, I try to read it once a year or so. It's just that it creates an uproar when somebody kills john lennon and blames it on the cather in the rye.

i think that' s pretty forward to assume people like it because some other intelligent person liked it. i'm not sure who you're even talking about but i loved the book. i think it accurately portrays someone who doesn't feel apart of this world and cannot associate with anyone. it stays true to the character the entire novel and is extremely hypnotic, it's hard not to read straight through.
obviously you can have your own opinion, but you should not express why other people like the book.

Holden Caulfield was one of the greatest characters ever created, but he was weak, and he was fake, and he was generally unlikable; a true anti-hero.
He claimed to be apart from the world around him that he so hated, yet he was a perfect mirror for the hate in his soul and he did not even realize it; the only difference was that he tried to rise above it, only to fail at the end when he saw just how all encompassing it was.
holden is so endearing not because he's a bad ass or anything stupid like that, but because his struggle against his world is the same as our stuggle against this one. we feel for him because we know him, we go through the same things as him everyday, and pray that we are stronger

Holden Caulfield was a great character. He showed alot of emotions you dont see in characters these days. The whole falling in love with a lesbian thing brought out alot of things in relationships you dont see in movies! Aflleck rules. AFFLECK WAS THE BOMB IN PHANTOMS ALSO.....BONNNNG!

I fell in love with Phoebe when I first read the book. Oh, the days of early pedophilia.
