it drives me completely insane how every band i go see has to do the whole encore thing. wave goodbye, say goodnight, get off stage. then everyone should applaud and scream their little hearts out just so that the band will come back and play a few more songs... it reminds me of the whole tinkerbell thing.
anyway, everyone knows the band's coming back. the house lights stay down, so obviously people aren't supposed to leave. and they usually leave one of their big songs for the encore, too. i just don't understand why we all have to go through this exercise every single time. just play a few more songs, say good night for real, and everyone goes home.

i guess they do it so they can take a piss or just take a break real quick before the last set.

It does get annoying at some shows. There are times that you get a genuine encore. This usually takes place after the scheduled ritual encore. You can tell whether or not it's genuine or just part of the act.
The Strokes don't do any encores. I guess the reasons are their attitude and small song catolog.

I saw the Eurythmics back when their first album came out. Even though they already preformed it during the set, they did "Sweet Dreams" again during the encore. Chalk it up to a small song catalog.

Hey! how about throwing in some suggestions about what a band is supposed to do?! If the band just leaves, everybody gets pissed off and they're arrogant fucks who don't care about their fans... if they do an encore people bitch...what the hell should they do?!

The whole point is that these encores seem too staged. I wouldn't mind artists doing genuine encores when the crowd goes wild and calls them back onto the stage.
They could play a song that's not usually in their setlist.
Bring out a special guest performer.
Do a cover song or two.
Anything that you might consider special or different would qualify here.
No Problem with the whole Strokes thing Fatty. Don't hold back next time though.

Honestly, I don't usually WANT a special guest to show up or a cover song...hell, I'm there to hear their songs first and foremost...I could see cover songs at any bar...
Anthrax is one band that does not encore. The have a set break, but at no time will all the band members leave the stage. And as previously stated, usually for the proverbial piss or dump.

You never would have made it in the 70's, the decade of "the long drum solo"! Halfway through a show, the band would walk off and the drummer would do a 20 minute show, which was awful. Eventually, they added brighter lights and lasers, but it was still the time to pee or stretch your legs.
As for encores, some bands actually would play longer if you screamed and yelled, bands like Hot Tuna and the Allman Brothers would play for 5 hours.

Neal Peart still does 5-10 minute drum solos. But The Rhythm Method is too fucking amazing
