Alice in Chains Lead Singer Dies
(Seattle, WA) -- After a long
battle with drug abuse, "Alice in
Chains" front man Lane Staley
has died. According to KOMO Four
News, the Seattle Fire
Department confirmed Staley was
found Friday afternoon in his
University District home. Initial
reports indicate that Staley died
of a drug overdose. Police were
asked to check on the singer and
guitar player when friends had
not heard from him. Staley was
born in Kirkland in 1967 and
formed "Alice in Chains" in 1987.
"Alice in Chains" was one of the
pioneering bands of Seattle's
grunge movement in the '80s and
'90s. Staley had gone to rehab
for heroin abuse at least twice in
his career, a battle that landed
him the cover of "Rolling Stone"
magazine. Lane Staley was 34
years old.

I loved these guys. Lane you will be missed. Heaven Beside You was my favorite song. Seems just like yesterday their video for Man In The Box came out.

This is really not the kind of thing I wanted to wake up to this morning. Alice in Chains is my all-time favorite band and I've had pics of Layne Staley all over my walls since high school. I'm really upset and I don't know why. I guess it's because this is just another favorite band, like Sublime, that I'll never have the chance to see live. I'd probably cry right now but then I'd have to call myself a whiny fag so I won't.

wow. while i can't say that i'm surprised, i just can't believe this. i guess i always kind of harbored a secret little dellusion that layne would clean up his act, and get the band back out there. this is truly disappointing and saddening. so much talent.. this is all just getting so cliche

This just sucks...I agree with Lara, I didn't need to hear that this morning, last night was too good.
While "Dirt" is my definitive AIC album, my definitive Layne album is still the Mad Season album...unreal, bluesy, and angry...I had heard they were doing another disc, but who knows what the status of that is now.
I guess this means Scott Weiland's casket will be waiting before long...

I just read on CNN.com that they think it might be Stanley's body though it hasnt been identified...so there is actually hope. Not that much though...

This is pitiful....just pitiful i woke up at 5am to get water, had K-ROCK on and heard this shit. I cant believe this, i know im only 17 and didnt know this band whn they were famous, but i think thats better b/c i found their music in a point in my life where i had nothing at all. Their music helped me get through so many points in my life, and now to know to actually know that theyll never be a band again its hard to take.

This is really shitty news. I heard this on CNN last night, and it totally bummed me out. Lane was an incredibly talented artist, but unfortunately, his death doesn't shock me that much. I'm only surprised in the sense that it happened and I was caught off guard by it, but really.....I loved the guy's music, but he was really bad into drugs. I'm betting an autopsy will probably turn up an overdose.
This just sucks....Alice in Chains is, IMO, one of the best bands of the past 20 years. I've always been a big fan of their music, and this is a tragedy. I had hoped that since they put out their box set a while back that they were getting their shit together and going to try to reunite again.....that'll never happen now. RIP, Lane, I hope you have peace now.
I just have 2 more things to say:
AiC is (and probably always will be) better than Godsmack.
Weiland better not kick it and leave another void in the musical landscape.

So fucking sad. I found out today (monday). The best band of my highschool days, I agree one of the best bands in the last 20 years. I was fortunate enough to see them on the Clash of the Titans show, where Slayer headlined and AIC opened. Chains tore it up and were the best band of the night night even with only a half hour set, and a young band at that. May your soul fly high, Layne.

Layne, hope you can finally find the peace you were looking for. Thank you for the years of great music . . . you will be remembered.

I honestly can't say I'm surprised to hear it. Everyone knew that he had a terrible drug addiction and it's sad that he couldn't kick that. But, he will be missed.

Skidmark- I hear ya, I was suprised to be as floored as I was by the news, knowing he was an addict for so long. I was also suprised by my reaction - I can't stand melodramatic bullshit, but it really did affect me. When an artist dies you identified with, especially as directly as a writer/vocalist, you can feel like you lost an old friend.
