Yeah...for me, wrestling is cyclical. Love him or hate him, Vince Russo was the first person to understand that in 1998 the fans don't want marathon matches. It worked then, but now people are coming around towards actual wrestling matches again. There are a good, solid crop of workers in the WWF that are very capable of putting on a solid PPV...
RVD...Eddie Guerrero...Rey Mysterio (soon)...Kidman...Jericho... Benoit...Regal...HHH...Austin
Rocky...Edge...Jeff Hardy... Lance Storm...X-Pac
See what I mean? Even the folks who love to rate the matches with stars...here's a show full of 4 and 5 star matches...HUZZAH!

I would hope that you're right - that people are looking for wrestling again. I'm primarily interested in workrate, which is why I like guys like Chris Benoit or William Regal over the Rock. I could really give a shit if Benoit or Regal could give a great promo (well....Regal CAN, but you get the point), they can get the job done in the ring.
But I don't really see things changing. At this point, I think Vince only cares about getting himself or his kids on TV. Apparently that's more important than the actual talent going out and having matches that last longer than 3 minutes.

First of all, I totally disagree with the whole --wrestling is cyclical-- theory. Wrestling is popular when wrestling is good. Period.
Look at all the down times, and there was a whole lot of crap. Sure, the mid 90's WWF had Hart and Michaels in the main events, but a quick look at the undercard and overall booking shows a true lack of creativity and talent. WCW was just starting to come into its own, and ECW was mostly a regional phenomenon. When wrestling was at it's peak in the late 90's, it wasn't merely because it was that time for it to cycle up, it was because there were THREE promotions putting out kickass products. The only people who control the --cycle-- are the wrestling promoters themselves. Unfortunately, the only promoter with any national exposure these days, is breaking down hard and he doesn't even seem to know it, and his awful offspring aren't able to fill his shoes. So be it...
Anyway, referring to the topic at hand, I don't think the WWF fans are demanding better quality in the matches. They're too stupid to even know what a real wrestling match should look like. The fans who want real, good matches, have long ago turned to the indys and puro and lucha. What they're left with, is a bunch of braindead pseudofans who will mark out for the promos and catchphrases and skits, but tune out the product once the bell rings. Amazingly, this has been profitable and still is. But once it isn't, is there anything left to build on?
Can I chill here for a while?
