how often do you change your car's motor oil?

Did you know that in some Car Manual's it tells you to change it every 7500 miles...

That got me thinking that somehow the Oil Companies had spread the rumor to change it every 3000, or the mechanics... not hard to figure out that it mean's double the sales...
"I am always suspicious"

I change my oil around 5000-6000 and I have never had a problem, my 88 Cougar ran great for 10 years and 170,000 miles...

What do you think?

Honestly, I always see the difference in engine power when I have the fresh oil in...maybe your car was just a powerhouse, none of mine could have gone that long without an oil change.

I change the oil every 3000-5000 miles. Sometimes it gets beyond 6000 miles if I'm really forgetful. My Toyota pick up is 11 years old, has over 235,000 miles on it and it's still going strong. I almost always use Quaker State oil and Fram filters.

I notice an improvement in power after an oil change too, probably because the engine doesn't have to use some of its power to push the oil through a plugged (or at least a very dirty) filter.

Whenever I remember :p

I'm not worried though. My car is
les than 3 years old and there's
only about 15,000+ miles on it. I
guess it gets changed every
4-5k...

I'd say split the difference and change every 5000 miles. The manual usually says to change every 3000 miles under extreme conditions. "Extreme conditions" mean highway driving in the hot summer, cold winter driving, pulling a trailer, etc. If that's you, then do it every 3000 miles.

Whatever you do, be sure it gets changed on a regular basis. Oil is the lifeblood of your car. Consider it an insurance against having your engine wear prematurely.

Some drugs just won't take NO for an answer.

I probably do it around every
4000 or so - but I don't cahnge it
myself anymore; I've decided
that that is just a total waste of
time when I can take it to
JiffyLube and they'll do it for like
$30 AND vacuum my car for me.

I go to one of those places where you stay in your car while they change your oil and this one time all I wanted was my fuel filter changed and as soon as I pulled in the guy under my car changed the oil. I asked the mechanic why the guy is doing that since I didn't ask and he told me that it's the first thing they do. Well needless to say I got a free oil change that day. :)
