Greedy Cablevision wants to offer Yankee games as a premium channel, like HBO, for an extra price. That means fans who really want to watch the Yanks will get to do so -- they'll just have to pay the market price.
As a Mets fan, it's sweet satisfaction. The Yanks owe their dominance to TV revenues. It's no coincidence that they have baseball's highest payroll; it's a byproduct of having the largest local TV market.

Poison, are you watching the games on DirecTV?
YES - owned mostly by jowly George Steinbrenner - is being carried as a basic cable channel for Cablevision customers. But Cablevision insists on selling YES in "upper deck"prices -- something like $8 to $12 more -- but only for those who want it.
Yankee fans are just dollar signs in Cablevision's world.
Some drugs won't take NO for an answer.
Actually, its just business. The Yankees are charging the cable companies a lot of money to carry the YES network. Cablevision is just trying to pass the cost onto their customers. Why should they have to take the brunt of the financial loss just because Steinbrenner is greedy? Cablevision only wants to charge 2 bucks a month for the YES network, but the Yankees are fighting them.

Sure Cablevision is greedy, but so is George, for making the YES network in the first place. Apparently he wants even more money, just like Dolan. But then again, it's his team, and he can do whatever he wants.
If you want to see the games badly enough, you can always get DirectTV(unless you live in an apartment building that doesn't allow dishes...then you're screwed), if you can afford it.
But Met's fans better not kid themselves that it won't be the same for them either...Eventually the Mets will do the same thing, and eventually all sports will be on a pay per view basis the way the YES network is, because the owners know that us idiot fans will pay either way.
I once heard a quote somewhere...that sports fans are one of the biggest groups of people that have a lot of power, but don't use it at all.
It sucks that the fans are going to pay here, but it isn't the first and won't be the last time that fans get fucked over.

Cablevision only wants to charge 2 bucks a month for the YES network, but the Yankees are fighting them. there are some things confused here. the yes network wants 1.85(2 dollars)for every f'n cable box cablevision has....not who want the yes network.EVERY customer.(I have two boxes so they want 2x1.85) cable vision dosent want to raise everyone's cable bill so they will offer it for between 10 and 20 dollars a billing cycle(1 month), Cablevision is being sqeezed for cash and people are bailing to satellite dish...the truth is the rich just keep getting richer and they want to screw us. The players put the screws to the team... the team puts the screws to consumers....... I wont pay it. The yankees are free or their not on my tv.
Its a war for advertising revenue.

We were just talking about this last night in the College Football thread. The mediacom subscribers down here are losing ABC after Jan 8.
It was supposed to end at midnight Dec 31st, but Epo was saying the FCC stepped in and forced the networks to extend their contracts through the bowl games. (The Nat'l Title game is on ABC this year on 1/7)
This is becoming a serious problem nationwide.
I'm not sure which side to blame at this point (Networks or the Cable Co's). Being a DirecTV subscriber, it hasn't affected me yet, but I'm sure it will soon.

fox has apparently had issues with other providers when their various contracts have come up. fios will have their turn, i'm sure. i know it's cablevision's spin on it, but here's the email they sent out:
We regret to inform you that News Corp, in an act of corporate greed, has pulled Fox 5 and My9 from your Cablevision channel lineup. This is an unfortunate attempt to extort unreasonable and unfair fee increases from Cablevision and our customers.
News Corp is demanding more for Fox 5 than we pay for every other broadcast channel. In fact, they want more for Fox 5 than we pay CBS, NBC, ABC and Univision combined and are asking for more than $150 million a year. That’s an $80 million increase for the exact same programming! In these tough economic times, an increase of these vast proportions is irresponsible and unfair.
We have made numerous fair and reasonable proposals to News Corp and they have refused every one. And now, News Corp has pulled the plug on Fox 5 AND My9. This was News Corp’s decision, not ours. We want to keep these channels on the air while we negotiate a fair agreement.
As a result of News Corp’s refusal to negotiate, Cablevision is willing to accept binding arbitration to resolve this matter fairly. We are confident that an independent third party will agree that what we are offering to pay News Corp is fair. We call on News Corp to accept binding arbitration, and return Fox 5 and My9 to the air until an agreement is reached.
We apologize for the inconvenience caused by News Corp’s actions, and we ask for your help. Call 1-877-NO-TV-TAX (1-877-668-8829) or visit www.cablevision.com/fox and tell News Corp to put Fox 5 and My9 back on the air, and to keep you out of the negotiations.
Thank you for your patience, your patronage and your support.

its not really spin. Fox decided to use the WS to leverage that deal. They did it to dish network and are going to do it to them again in a couple weeks. This really is nothing on cablevision.
Cablevision offered to go to an arbiter to reach an agreement and news corp said no. The FCC called news corp and said go to an arbiter and then told them no. This is all on fox
the bolding is mine. that's just insane shit there.
That's because they aren't paying anything for any channel other than ABC. The broadcast networks want to be paid and only ABC's contract has come up yet. So in reality, Fox is asking more than they are paying for ABC.
SKANE
10-17-2010, 09:10 AM
Yeah, this one is all on Fox. And they will continue to do it to other providers. Just sucks getting stuck in the middle of it. If we didn't have phone, internet and cable with Cablevision we'd be having a Dish installed tomorrow.
Cablevision is also saying that they are paying 70 million for 12 Fox channels. That 70 million is for 9 channels other than Fox 5, Fox 29 and My9. They aren't paying anything for those 3.
I'd have a lot more sympathy for Cablevision if their rates weren't ridiculous to begin with.

actually no, fox reached its number cause of nothing to do with anything.
Fox decided it wanted 150 mill cause cablevision spends 175 mill just on MSG and MSG+. But thats cause they operate those channels. They dont operate fox, so they shouldnt have to pay that much. This is pretty much all on news corp, they are gonna do it to dish tv in a couple weeks, then the rest will follow. Fuck, they offered (cablevision) to go to arbitration. So if fox is right, they would win. So why would fox say no? Cause they are wrong

it's not an option, FIOS all the way.
even if all the channels were the same, which they are not because FIOS has more, the FIOS on demand is 10x better. way more channels available on demand meaning a ton more options to watch.
the DVR is better, plus multi-room DVR and apps for your phone to schedule when you are not home.

I need a cheap plan that's just cable + online. I already have Verizon as my wireless provider, would that get me any kind of discount if i go with their company?
Also, i care less about the cable being out than i do about the online going out-which i hear happens often with FIOS.

i have had FIOS for 2 years at my parents house, and then a year or so in my apt and I never had an issue. the internet is rock solid and much quicker then the cablevision internet. they also provide you with their own router so if you don't have wireless gear, it comes with the package

i agree on the TV, but the internet, no. A couple friends of mine have fios internet and its no where NEAR as fast as my internet on optimum. They are always having to wait a couple minutes for videos to load or it will catch up and keep freezing. Youtube loads terrible. I guess they all could have shit computers but I doubt it. The internet from verizon is TERRIBLE compared.
TV is way better though. Id go with fios tv if you can but still get cable internet

I have had fios for close to 3 years now and it is by far the best tv and internet service i have ever had. comcast cable/internet sucked balls. fios is so much faster you have 3 speeds to choose from (if i remember correctly) and mine isnt the highest/fastest choice yet it is super fast.
no one is inexpensive but fios is the best, go with fios

FIOS is very dependent on the area when it comes to speed. To a certain extent so is cable but fiber is simply more sensitive to the environment than cable is. I'm getting 25 down/5 up on Comcast and really don't need more. I've seen Verizon advertise speeds as high as 50/20 but I can't say that i've personally ever seen them hit even 20/10.
Back on Fox, the commercials that have been running on 880 and 1010 WINS are hysterical, Cablevision lays out a list of reasons why they aren't paying including dollar amounts, Fox has what sounds like the Fox News announcer saying "Cablevision is taking Fox away from you."

i actually install fios. i'm not a salesman but if you CAN get it and don't thats just stupid. bob impact it has nothing to do with the area you're in. you may actually have dirty light which is taking away from the internet speed. then again i have people everyday that order 35/35 and the wireless card in their shit laptop can't reach that speed.
the real issues ive seen people have a problem with are on the billing end. the service itself is the tits. you get 12 hbo's yeah all in hd. same goes for every other movie channel.
i myself am a comcast customer and i'm paying about 200 a month for their ball licking hd lineup.

I have laughed everytime I see those commercials. If I was cablevision I wouldnt pay them dick. Fox is free if you dont have cable so why would they pay? Cablevision should actually be happy that they give their subscribers fox for free because it brings a ton of viewers to their station that they might not get without a cable company. I hope cablevision sticks to their guns and gives them dick. All people will have to do is hook their computers to their tvs or go out and buy one of those over the air antenas. If I was a cablevision customer I wouldnt want them to pay either because eventually that will raise your rates as well for nothing.

They want more for those 3 than is currently paid for all the other networks. And Hbox tried to say they pay nothing for those other channels. thats not true. they pay for them, its just a seperate agreement so it doesnt effect this.

Fucking low blow bc they are sep services and they will and are being sued I hear. Thankfully they don't know much of atdhe and other sites for the mlb playoffs. Fuck both sides at this point.

That was part of it, but they have also blocked their own site for longer. It's opened up now, but I think it's bc they were advised to do so since they would surely lose that argument very fast. It was down for a few days more from what's being reported. Even so, what a bullshit move.

I honestly can't believe that this bullshit is still going on. There have been other situations similar to this with other networks and other cable companies, but they always seem to work it out with minimal interruption of service, if any.
The cable industry is a scumbag industry. It either needs full regulation like a utility, or real, honest-to-god competition, so that I can switch cable providers easily without having some douche rewire all my shit. This half-assed thing we got now where they have no regulation, and no real competition (most of the country still has only one choice of providers) is bullshit.

This is fucking hilarious: Cablevision's excuse for why their pissing contest with Fox isn't over yet is that Fox turned down binding arbitration.
So the NFL Network, which is not on shitty Cablevision, decided to take advantage of the situation:
NFL Network chief Steve Borstein, in a letter to Dolan, a copy of which has been obtained by The Post, calls on Cablevision to bring in mediators to resolve the dispute and get key games to viewers.
"I'm encouraged to hear that Cablevision supports binding arbitration and would recommend that approach in our own discussions with you for carriage of NFL Network," Borstein wrote in the letter. "This is an ideal opportunity for both of our organizations to come to mutually agreeable terms for carriage."
The NFL Network, in roughly 60 million homes, has deals with all the major cable and satellite operators except Cablevision, which won't carry the service to its 3 million New York area households because of the terms the NFL Network is seeking.
Cablevision refused to comment.

and the NFL is siding with Fox because Fox pays the NFL for tv rights and they are losing viewers of their games because Fox isnt on cablevision. They have to back fox.
Fox has been advertising to people to cancel their cablevision subscriptions and swith to direct tv, fios or get rabbit ears. Not kidding that have commercials all over and that is one of the many reasons I side with the cable company. Fox is basically admitting that they dont deserve to get paid because Fox is free with or without cable so why should cablevision pay them? Like I said before, Fox should be happy cablevision gives Fox for free to their customers because it is an easier way for 60 million customers to watch fox. Which allows them to charge more for advertising because they have a larger viewer base. No one should be mad at cablevision because they will only raise your subscription price in order to pay Fox what they want. Fox is the one being greedy asking for money for something that is free and holding their viewers for ransom.

also this is a little unfair in comparison. To answer the bottom question, cause some people have to. Its the only choice I have where I am. no Fios yet.
As to your NFL network comparison, its a completely different issue.
Fox already had a deal, then went to them and asked for incredible sums of money which they would never win in arb. So cablevision offers it knowing fox is being retarded and they will win, and fox says no.
The NFL Network has never had an agreement with cablevision. They want Cablevision to buy their product and cablevision wont buy it because they wont throw in sunday ticket.
you cant go to arbitration to force someone to buy something they never even agreed to buy. If they dont wanna buy it, they dont have to.
Its different from a company turning around and doubling its rates on an existing agreement and asking for more than any other channel gets.
