What do you think the music world would have of been like had Buddy Holly survived?? Some people think Holly would have of been a revolutionary in his own right. Some think he would have been more conservative and leaned towards the country element (I personally disagree).

The most important influence of Budy Holly is the name of the Beatles...John Lennon named the Beatles as a memorium of 'Buddy Holly and the Crickets'. Now the question begs what would the Beatles be named if Holly never died. And would they have of prospered with 'whatever' name they carried??

Buddy was an absolute genius, and his influence on both country and rock to this day cannot be measured.

I also often think of how brilliant Ritchie Valens was, and he died at age 17. Amazing.

If you really look at that time period (late '50's, early '60's), Elvis went into the army, Buddy and Ritchie died, and Chuck Berry got locked up for bringing a minor over the border from Mexico (he claimed he was going to employ her as a hat check girl in his night club). I think this is the main reason for the "British Invasion." Someone had to pick up the slack.

Here's a trivia question for you...who gave up his seat on the ill-fated flight to Richie Valens?

It was Waylon Jennings.

I think all this discussion came up vause I saw La Bamba the other day on HBO...come on who doesnt see "Bob" (Richie's brother) and not laugh...he was the classic "Drunk Bobbie".

But seriously, GVAC brings up a good point, Valens was only 17 and tearing up the tracks. Perhaps he would have introduced the Latin Sensation before Enrique Englaisas and Ricky Martin...

I read somewhere that he was working closely with Paul Anka as far as extending the focus of his songwriting shortly before his death.

Epo is too busy slaughtering defenseless animals and stealing money from non profit companies, to know about any dates.

i'm diggin the richie valens love, but lets not forget buddy holly died at the ripe old age of 22! and he was writing songs in his teens as well.

easily my favorite artist from that era and one of my favorite ever to be honest. the songs "words of love" and "oh boy" (which i believe i posted as one of the definitive rock songs in a gvac thread) and others are timeless and just incredible pieces of music.

and he played a fender strat, what more could you want?

in reference to the very first post up top, I thought the Beatles named themselves after the motorcycle club in "The Wild One"?

Either way, I'll crank up the Killdozer cover of that shitty Don McLean song sometime tomorrow.

Er, The motorcycle gang in The wild One are the Black Rebels Motorcycle Club...which the band, The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club took their named from.

Buddy Holly was originally advised to name his backing band "The Beetles" (Buddy Holly & the Beetles, alliteration oh boy!) but chose The Crickets instead.

Thus The Beatles is an homage to Buddy Holly, who was infinitely more popular in England than in the States in the 50's.

You guys need to bone up on your rock history.

I was talking about the BRMC's rival Club, The Beetles, led by Lee Fucking Marvin.

I think the more interesting question is what would have happened if Waylon Jennings had been ON the plane like he was supposed to be? I wonder how that would have changed music history

No Shooter Jennings, no Highwaymen, no Highwayman album that balances Waylon, Willie, Johnny and Kris so beautifully ... it would've been sad, really.

Apparently, Waylon felt incredibly guilty about that trade for his entire life.

Not to mention Waylon's impact on Nashville commercially...he demanded things that had never been demanded before (complete creative control, wanting his own band, the Waylors, to back him up, lyrical content etc) and pretty much changed country music in that respect when he sold millions of albums with no support from the establishment. There simply IS no "outlaw" movement in country music without him...guys like Willie and Jerry Jeff Walker and David Allen Coe all would have remained "extreme fringe" guys
