Ok...I understand they are trying to get their point across but come on now...there are so many people out there on drugs that are so much more severe than cigarettes. If we want to smoke and kill our lungs then let us! What the hell is up with those commercials? I feel like they just want a buck from sponsors and want a pat on the back for 'doing the right thing". I just needed to vent...

I guess it's just a way to feel cool. I have three friends who work for the company and they want to vomit whenever I light up a cigarrette. I thought it was only for the job...but they really hate it.

The problem is, and it has always been, tell someone they can't do something and it will only provoke them to do it more.
I do believe, however, that the truth.com has some good intentions. Problem is most of thier ideas share the same campiness as those "The More You Know" commercials.
Although trite, I say live and let die. I see no problem with a thinning of the herd, and being a smoker myself, I am glad to contribute my body to preservation of natural resources.

Actually I am going to take this one step further.
The real problem is the arrogance behind the comercials.
They act as self-righteous egotiscal assholes, who think they are better than the rest of the world cause they don't smoke
FUCK THEM!!
and I agree with Lulu those comercial only make me want to smoke more... simply out of spite of how much I hate Truth.com

I read the other day that obesity is now considered a disease. So does that mean "sin taxes" will be applied to food they way they are to cigarettes? I guess eating is now to be considered "risky behavior".
Following this logic, why not put "sin taxes" on condoms?
The truth is smoking will never be banned because so much revenue is generated from the tax. So help your community: by a pack of smokes!

Well, I guess this ties both my topics into one....my Pro-choice/life topic and this one. Who are these people telling us to live our lives? Pro-lifers (religous groups) buying billboards telling us that we're killing babies and Truth.com is going even further than that by renting airplanes with banners, TV ads, magazine ads, and even had the singer Moby wear one of their shirts on an awards show. I guess what I want to get across is the point that people are so busy pointing fingers at others and not looking at themselves. Sometimes, I feel like that is what makes us so miserable sometimes. Why is everyone out pointing out the negative? Why can't someone put out a commercial on the rise of employment or how teenage drinking went down every five minutes. The only time I get to see those commercials is during a political campaign.

But "The More You Know" plays off an unintentionally funny vibe. They know it and they play off it. (Besides, great Conan spoofs)
Truth.com comes at you with a holier than thou attitude. "We're better than you because we know what's in cigarettes and now we'll torture you with that info"

I don't miind anti-smoking ads, but if you are going to run them tell people about why you shouldn't smoke, don't just attack the ciggarette companies, like it is there fault you picked up a pack. They didn't force you to they are just providing a service.

The actual commercials themselves do not. I think they take themselves very seriously. I think every celebrity who does one of those ads think he's doing g-d's good work. Conan picked up on the campiness and preachiness of the commercials and ran with it.
I do agree with you on thetruth.com's "holier-than-thou" attitude toward spreading the word about smoking.
You know what would work...something as simple as "Smoking...it's your right, but if you want to quit or need more information, we are here." It's like leave the door open for people to decide for themselves. We don't need a bunch of snot-nosed teenagers preaching the dangers of inhalation smoke. Anyone who's not aware of them or ignorant of them by now should be shot. And a pox on the US Judicial System for awarding cigarette "victims" countless millions for thier pain and suffering.
I've always been critical of that judgement. I think it had nothing to do with the victims of cigarette smoking. It was a slap to the face of cigarette manufacturers everywhere, a reminder that no matter how rich and powerful you are, you're not above the law. I say "slap in the face" intentionally. The reparations they were forced to make toward the sick hardly put a dent in thier bank accounts. In fact, the money they spend on counter-advertising and lawsuits is relatively small compared to thier yearly annual profit reports. Phillip Morris is still one of the Top 100 companies, as are the rest of Big Tobacco, and g-d bless them. They make a product people want, plain and simple. It comes down to the fundamental question, "Who are we to judge the lifestyles of other people?" It's the same reason why I look at marijuana and shake my head baffled as to why people are so afraid of this plant. They were smoking it centuries before this country was ever made. Some of our own founding fathers smoked pot and tobacco.
Stupid and hypocritical.

In vino veritas
There's a place in the world for the angry young man With his working class ties and his radical plansHe refuses to bend, he refuses to crawl,He's always at home with his back to the wall. And he's proud of his scars and the battles he's lost,And he struggles and bleeds as he hangs on the cross-And he likes to be knowns as the angry young man.
I think the commercials are aimed at teens and pre-teens. And, for that, I think they are effective.
If you are an adult and smoking despite all the reasons not to, I don't think anyone is wasting any money to convert you.
As much as you have a right to smoke, they have a right to encourage people not to. Even if you are a smoker, I think you can admit that kids shouldn't start. I've never met a smoker that says they'd encourage a 12 yearold to do so...

Well, in a larger sense....sometimes it IS good for people to tell you how to live.
I mean, we can all say that yeah, it's our right to smoke cigarettes if we want to, but cigarettes do a lot of damage to your health and the health of others (including those around you), and that, as a whole, has a negative result against society. There are the huge amount of medical bills that result from treatment from cigarette related illnesses (cancer, emphasema, heart disease, etc.), and every unhealthy smoker who gets sick / dies is one less productive member of our society. Which damages teh workplace, which damages our economy, etc., etc. It all trickles down.
So yes, you can live your life as you see fit, but sometimes doing so can have a very massive effect our society, for good or bad. And if that effect IS bad, than I don't think it's SO horrible for a group to tell you so. After all, unless it's a law, you don't have to listen to what they have to say; it's an annoyance, sure, but as annoying as the Truth commercials are, they do bring up some important points out the dangers of smoking.
So there you go, devil's advocate.
Personally, I think the Truth.com ads (which as others have pointed out, are made by the tobacco companies) are just a clever ploy by the cig manufacturers to hate their commercials SO much you WANT to start smoking.

Nobody is debating the message, it is the commercial itself that is hated by myself and others
Its that condescending, arrogant tone throughout the commercial that, at least, annoys me

Starting in May I work for
Truth.com
The bottom line is, theyre not
telling anyone what to do. No
where in any of those
commercials do they say "DONT
SMOKE." The ad's tell people the
straight facts about cigerette
smoking. What you do with the
knowledge is your own problem.
Plus, people hate to be told
when theyre doing something
wrong. No one wants to hear
their own ignorance, so hearing
that they have been doing
something unbeneficial to their
own health makes them sound
stupid- and they dont like it.
But the commercials, stickers, ads
ect.. are designed to tell people
right out about smoking, what it
can cause, what cigerettes are
really made of, what long term
smoking does for your health. If
you dont use the knowledge, its
up to you.
My own personal reasons for not
smoking are not even mentioned
in the ads, the disgusting teeth
and breath, the loss of athletic
ability- all really gross.
