anyone know how i can get to be a part of arbitron ratings survey oe even the nielson thing? i've always been curious bout how it works

From what I remember the Nielsons pick you randomly.
My friends family use to be part of it, they got all the channels on TV for free for a year.They had a box that recorded what they were watching and when. From what I can remember.

Arbitron mails out packages to random households, I assume they get most of their information through the census. My family got one once, and they send you some "diaries" where you write down what station you listen to and when, and envelopes to mail them back to the company by a certain date. Also, they usually put $5-$10 in singles in the envelope to "pay" you for your time, at least that's what we got.

You can't ask to be part of doing Arbitron ratings (and I assume Nielsen) as they think that this skews the results.
