Why would Mexicans want to ban Speedy? He's the only Mexican that you'll EVER see moving fast.

Sunny thinks this is a good idea, however, and is appalled at the lack of ethnic diversity in cartoons...

I don't think that's true! Scooby Doo, for example...there's LOADS of Spooks on that show.

In vino veritas

There's a place in the world for the angry young man With his working class ties and his radical plansHe refuses to bend, he refuses to crawl,He's always at home with his back to the wall. And he's proud of his scars and the battles he's lost,And he struggles and bleeds as he hangs on the cross-And he likes to be knowns as the angry young man.

I might understand if Speedy Gonzalez was like the character that got picked on and always loses in the end....BUT he was like the Mexican Bugs Bunny. What the fuck is this world coming to???????

As a white man I'm offended by the Elmer The Fudd and Yosemidy Sam characters. Both displayed the white man as shoot first don't care about the consequence later. They were heartless and always wanted to kill. Plus they were stupid people and were able to be fooled by a rabbit.

I want them out of cartoons. I'M OFFENDED.

NOW do you people see how retarded that sounds?

You mean Slowpoke Rodriguez, Speedy's cousin? That was a funny episode.

Are we soon going to see tapes of cartoons burned in effigy in front of libraries or town halls? The whole idea of teaching tolerance gets set back years when they start this crap. The world is ripe with different personalities and viewpoints. Getting rid of cartoons isn't going to solve the problems of racial stereotyping. To bring up a bit from another WNEW show, the stereotypes wouldn't exist if there wasn't a kernel of truth to it at some point in time.

I think if enough of the hispanic population is offended, it should be banned. Just because one person whose hispanic isn't bothered doesn't mean that the other 99.99 are fine with it too.

Racist Cartoons, racist jokes, they promote stereotypes and solidify negative and hateful thoughts about minorities. That's just my opinion.

Sometimes political correctness goes too far, yes. But I think this is on the right side of the line.

the stereotypes wouldn't exist if there wasn't a kernel of truth to it at some point in time.

This is by far the most ignorant, stupid, retarded, pathetic, and absolutely ridiculous statement I have ever heard. You're seriously going to justify racism and hate with this statement, willee? Why don't you give me some examples of these truthful stereotypes?

Stereotypes lead to racism, racism leads to hate, hate leads to violence. If you're going to justify stereotypes with that absolutely stupid statement...then you're basically labeling yourself as a bigot.

Sunndoggy-

Please don't take the quote out of context.

To bring up a bit from another WNEW show, the stereotypes wouldn't exist if there wasn't a kernel of truth to it at some point in time.

O&A did a thing where they talked about the leading causes of death of various minorities. The rankings and details of the whole thing escapes me, but I remember some of it.

Among the leading causes of death in the black population were murder and heart disease. Many blacks called into the show to back up the statements with the stereotypes that get used all the time- such things as gang violence, "Southern style" and fried foods and the like.

2. I went to a predominantly black HS. I was one of a handful of non-black students in the school. Many of my friends were black, Hispanic and a couple were Vietnamese. Even my friends would joke about stereotypes about their own races. I used to joke about being of Irish/German decent. Irish and Germans are said to be "drunks". I enjoy a good Irish Whiskey, and on the other hand I've had two uncles who've died due to alcoholism. Granted, it's considered to be a stereotype, but did it come out of thin air? Ireland is famous for it's pubs among other things, and Germany is said to have some of the finest beer around.

3. Stereotypes are not always inherently negative. While many of them are, it is not the case with all of them. You often hear of the Japanese being hard workers. Would you dispute this merely because it is considered to be a stereotype? I'm sure that not every single person fits the stereotype of their race, but do you think that this claim that they are hard workers came out of thin air, or was there some truth to it that caused it to come into existence? The Irish are said to be good fighters. Where do you think Notre Dame's team moniker of "The Fighting Irish" comes from?

I agree that it is ignorant to lump everyone of a race into a group because of stereotypes, but you have to admit that these stereotypes did not arise out of thin air. Some are bad, some are good, but I never judge a person on being black, white or some other ethnicity. I always judge on the character of the individual.

You said that maybe "the other 99.9 percent" may not be fine with the cartoon. Have you asked them? I don't recall that article making a sweeping statement in either direction about this.

Sunny still hasn't told us what makes Speedy Gonzalez is offensive.

I'm Irish and I'm not offended by the Bugs Bunny cartoons where the cops are always Irish. I embrace it.

By the way, I happen to know several Martians and they are not all concerned with conquering the moon and their voices certainly aren't muffled by their helmets. Marvin the Martian is such a negative stereotype.

wilee-

While you make a good point, you kill it by using an "official" O&A bit as proff that its' right. But it is a good point anyway. Part of many stereotypes were part of some truths...and you are right, in that some stereotypes based on perceived positives aren't that bad...but you have to look at why and where and how they came about.

But you have to admit that many of these labels and stereotypes were made in order to dehumanize and demean a specific group in order to further solidify the stratification of whites on top, blacks on bottom, and everyone else ranked in between.

Look at the other thread regarding Irish treatment after immigration by FUNKMAN. You are interpreting their stereotypes now as positive (because of the # of irish pubs), but in reality, they came from the specific dehumanization of the Irish immigrants as non-whites by those who considered themselves superior. History shows that they(Irish immigrants) were just barely a rung above blacks in terms of their percepttions as human beings.

I haven't asked hispanics how they feel, but my point is, if a majority of them are offended, it should be changed. They aren't a small group of 5 people protesting the cartoon if a majority disagree with it. Their race is a huge part of the US, and if a majority are offended, then it should be changed. My point wasn't about whether I know so, but that if they're offended, it should be changed.

I personally think it should be changed, but I think hispanics have more of a vote in it that I do, because I'm not in their shoes in terms of personal feelings about it. If they don't care about it and it doesn't offend them, then who cares. I got the impression that the article was poking fun at the dispute about a cartoon character, but if a large percent of hispanics are against it, it should probably be changed/banned.

Newyorkdragon, i didn't realize i had to explain myself again about why i think the cartoon should go...I'm pretty sure i addressed that already...i think it promotes stereotypes are mexican laziness, womanizing, hygience, etc(not only him, but the other characters in the cartoon)...so reread that if you want to hear me defend my opinion again...but i didn't realize that everyone was waiting for me to do so.

And just because you're irish and not offended by an irish stereotype, doesn't mean that others aren't either. I hate that argument. People will constantly say, oh hey, I'm not bothered, so why should anyone else be? Sorry to say, your one opinion doesn't mean that everyone else's is the same.

And in terms of Martians, if there was every contact with aliens from Mars, and if they were primarily offended by the character, it would probably be changed then too. But since to most of our knowledge, there are no martians, then your statement is retarded.

Sunny-

Yes, I'll agree many stereotypes are meant to dehumanize, but as I said in my post, they come from somewhere. I know the argument "I'm not offended, so why should they be" is not a good excuse to continue using stereotypes, but I was not using that as an excuse, merely pointing out that while some people are offended, some aren't.

You will probably agree with me when I say that there are some people in this world who will prey on groups and use them as a means to an end. They will pump people up with "empowerment" speeches, and send them out to march on Washington or City Hall for all kinds of perceived slights to their race. Groups have become too reactionary to "racial intolerance" nowadays. Screaming about a perceived act of intolerence tends to damage their credibility, so when they act upon a real one, people pay less attention.

As I've said before, stereotypes come from somewhere, whether it is from something good or bad. Some may have been perceived by observing a group as a whole, and some may have been perpetuated by someone who saw one person do it. I don't defend the practice of proliferating negative stereotypes, but they do exist, and all of them just didn't come out of thin air.

Speaking of the Irish, yes, the immigrants were made to fight each other for sport/money and were preyed upon in that manner. This happens all over the world, and no matter how enlightened a society we think everyone is, there's always someone looking to take advantage of someone less fortunate. What about when Carlos Mencia was talking about his father acting as a "broker" for a guy who was looking for someone to do work on his house? These Mexicans are guys looking for a way to get money, they are willing to work. That's not lazy, as the stereotype claims, but you have the guy who got cheap labor by "hiring" them. Is he taking advantage of them? Probably, but they could have said no in this instance.

Getting back to the issue of Speedy Gonzales, the article talks about how Cartoon Network pulled the show because THEY thought it would offend Mexican-Americans. The company was not the recipient of a large number of letters of complaint. Point being, most of the Warner Bros. cartoons have stereotypes running through them. The Irish cops, "Redneck" Yosemite Sam ("I've got to burn my boots- they touched Yankee soil"), the country "hicks" that are often portrayed. Should CN pull these cartoons too? Let's not stop here, what about people with speech impediments who might be offended at Daffy Duck or Porky Pig? Or animal rights activists who might claim that Elmer Fudd walking around with a shotgun encourages kids to hunt? The list goes on and on.

I still consider the cartoons entertainment, and nothing more. I never read into them any more than the slapstick comedy that they put on the screen. If people stop looking for things to be offended at, we might be better off.

The key thing about this whole banning situation....and this is what upsets me....was not that it's censored because people complained. It was censored because someone THOUGHT that someone would complain. I say run the cartoons, and then, IF someone takes issue with them, then have a serious look at them to decide if they should or should not be played.

As it stands, I just think this is all WAY too much of a politically correct, kneejerk reaction. "Oh Jesus, the Mexicans *might* be upset by this!" My opinion, is wait and see.

Wilee brought up a good point - if it's okay to ban Speedy because he's supposedly a stereoytpe, then you start down a road to ban ALL cartoons, because you could always find some reason to do so.
