It was real and f'd up any chance of the WWF pushing him as a legit tough guy.
Butterbean fucking destroyed him.

It was real, and furthermore, it was payback by Jim Ross, because Bart Gunn legit knocked the fuck out of Jim Ross' good buddy, Steve "Dr. Death" Williams during the WWF's brief "Brawl for All" boxing gimmick. Basically, they fed Bart to the sharks, in the form of Butterbean.
It actually worked out for Bart. Him knocking out Doc and the tough guy image he got from the Brawl for All landed him a job working in Baba's All Japan promotion. There he wrestles under the name Mike Barton, and has had pretty good success there.
It's really weird, because what once appeared to be career suicide (his Butterbean loss) was actualy the best thing to happen to his career.

As everyone has said earlier it was a total shoot and Bart Gunn got his ass handed to him! He would have been pushed if he won but damn you lost to THAT!
YOU LOST TO BUTTERBEAN!
