Why I want to kill Hollywood....

As an Akira Kurosawa fan, I'm very distressed.

First I heard that Harbor Light entertainment, some production company in L.A., has acquired the rights to remake Kurosawa's brilliant film "Rashomon". That's a travesty right there.

THEN I found out that Miramax and MGM are going to remake Kurosawa's masterpiece, "The Seven Samurai"! It'll be a "contemporary" retelling.

I HATE this shit. If you're a fan of Kurosawa, you know how wrong this really is. It's basically as ill-conceived a move as the horrible Psycho remake was. Christ, can't they leave the classics alone???

I'm totally with you, Se7en. Kurosawa has been ripped off by Hollywood for 50 years, and that's as it should be, I suppose. The Magnificent Seven was a good remake of the great Seven Samurai. But so many times, great films are fucked up by Hollywood remakes. When they don't call it a remake, and just take the ideas and do them in a different way, that's cool. Then if you pass a cinematic Hershey-squirt, you're on your own. And George Lucas and Terantino credit Kurosawa with borrowed ideas that hit big. Cool. But don't drag a great film down with you. I'm not saying anything new here, but shit, they just fucked up Yojimbo a few years ago with Last Man Standing, (it even had Walken in it and it was still a shit stain!)

I know I'm whining! I know I can still watch the originals whenever I want, and I don't have to go see this new thing, but the anticipation of the seeing the same Hollywood hype-whores trotting a Kurosawa remake around like Jean Benet Ramsey is pretty nauseating. There should be a moratorium of ten years on butchering a Kurosawa film. And by my watch he's got about five years to rest in peace.

For those who don't get the point here: Imagine a remake of Pulp Fiction starring David Hasselhoff, Jimmy (JJ) Walker and Brittany Spears (with no nudity), and Don Knotts as "The Wolf".

I suppose I have no problem with people remaking Kurosawa's films.....just as long as there's little to NO similarities between the remakes and the original other than a basic plot.

There have been some great Kurosawa remakes, notable "Magnificent Seven" from "Seven Samurai" and "A Fistful of Dollars" from "Yojimbo". But the remakes were different enough so as to not tarnish the legacy of the original.

Cause that's what I'm worried about. I don't want someone to come along and remake Akira's film itself, like Gus van Sant did with Psycho. The end result is almost always inferior.

I agee whole heartedly. The problem is there are so few original ideas left in Hollywood. A little off topic but along the same vein; the director of "Scooby Doo" is set to remake "Dawn of the Dead" with a contractual obligation to make it Pg-13. PG-13!!!!! The move was rated X when it was released in the seventies. Just another example of Hollywood shitting on a classic.
